A few members had asked me if I could do a verse by verse study on Hebrews and I decided I would go ahead and start a thread on it since I am almost finished with Galatians. I will be looking at at least 3 of the main greek MSS and various translations. I prefer YoungsLT and Rotherham as they more literally follow the greek texts and they also both use different MSS.

I will put up verses as time allows me and others are welcome to either add a verse, comment on a verse I put up or just browse. I will be using 3 online sources for the greek and hebrew.

Greek/Hebrew/English Interlinear

I hope this edifies those here on GT as much as it will edify me. God bless

CHAPTER 1

#4181 used 1 time in 1 verse. Some versions render it "many-parts" or "many-portions"

Hebrew 1:1 Many-portions/polumerwV <4181> and many-ways of old the God speaking to the fathers in the prophets

Textus Rec.) Hebrews 1:1 polumerwV kai polutropwV palai o qeoV lalhsaV toiV patrasin en toiV profhtaiV

Strong's Number G4181 matches the Greek πολυμερῶς (polymerōs), which occurs 1 time in 1 verse in the Greek concordance of the KJV

4181. polumeros pol-oo-mer'-oce adverb from a compound of 4183 and 3313; in many portions, i.e. variously as to time and agency (piecemeal):--at sundry times.
4183. polus pol-oos' including the forms from the alternate pollos; (singular) much (in any respect) or (plural) many;.......
3313. meros mer'-os from an obsolete but more primary form of meiromai (to get as a section or allotment); a division or share (literally or figuratively, in a wide application):--behalf, course, coast, craft, particular (+ -ly), part (+ -ly), piece, portion, respect, side, some sort(-what).

When I looked at the greek texts on these first 2 verses, I notice there was a difference in way the verses were "split". But I believe they pretty much stay the same after these.
This is a lovely revealing verse, matching a lot of what the first Chatper of John said.

Greetings frogster  Get ready for a "divine roller coaster" ride with this Book

#5287 used 5 times in 5 verses. 2 times in 2 Corinthians, 3 times in Hebrews.

This verse took awhile since there were a few variances between 2 of the greek texts [T-R and W-H].

The B-M text agreed with the T-R so I used that text.

I put 2 of my favorite Bible versions up at the bottom as comparisons since they use different texts, as do the KJV and NASB. This was challenging.......

#5287 is rendered various ways in Bible versions. I generally use this site as it also has 3 of the greek texts along with 2 of my favorite versions of Rotherham and YoungsLT.

Search for 'Genesis 1:1' in the version

1:3 Who being radiance of the glory and emblem/character of the support/essence/upostasewV <5287> of Him, carrying-on besides the all to the declaration of the power of Him *thru Himself* cleansing doing of the sins *of us*, is seated in right of the majesty in heights

Compare 5087.

Here is a way I do a typical verse if any are interested.
I find it best to to render each and every greek word in the order presented in the text.

This is one way to avoid either "adding" or "taking away" words from the NT Books.

If others would rather me do it this way instead of putting the greek text under my translation, let me know.

It is a little more time consuming, but worth it if it can edify others here. God bless

#1313 used 4 times in 4 verses. 1 time Romans {12:6}, 3 times in Hebrews.

Formed by 2 greek words and is rendered as "superior or excellent" in most Bible versions. At bottom is the rendering of 2 versions I generally use.

1:4 So much better/mightier becoming of the messengers, so-as more excellent/diaforwteron <1313> beside them having inheirited a name

Textus Rec.) Hebrews 1:4 tosoutw kreittwn genomenoV twn aggelwn osw diaforwteron par autouV keklhronomhken onoma

Strong's Number G1313 matches the Greek διάφορος (diaphoros), which occurs 4 times in 4 verses in the Greek concordance of the KJV

1313. diaphoros dee-af'-or-os from 1308; varying; also surpassing:--differing, divers, more excellent.
1308. diaphero dee-af-er'-o from 1223 and 5342; to bear through, i.e. (literally) transport;
1223. dia dee-ah' a primary preposition denoting the channel of an act; through............
5342. phero fer'-o a primary verb -- for which other, and apparently not cognate ones are used in certain tenses only; namely, oio oy'-o; and enegko en-eng'-ko to "bear" or carry (in a very wide application, literally and figuratively, as follows):--be, bear, bring (forth), carry, come,

http://www.olivetree.com/cgi-bin/EnglishBible.htm

Young) Hebrews 1:4 having become so much better than the messengers, as he did inherit a more excellent name than they.
Rotherham) Hebrews 1:4 By so much becoming superior to the messengers, by as much as, going beyond them, he hath inherited a more distinguished name.

I love that verse, "upholding all things by the word of his power".When you look at the stars, the Almighty is holding them together by His power! Reminds me of the verse "by the word of the Lord were the heavens made, the starry host by the breath of His mouth.

#4416 used 8 times in 8 verses according to ISA. 1 time in Gospels, Luke 2 [2 times according to KJV concordance..Matt 1, Luke 2], 6 times in Epistles [including 3 times in Hebrews], 1 time in Revelation {1:5}

Footnotes in versions note this is quoted in Deut 32:43 of the Septuagint, but it is missing in the Masoretic text and some Bible versions [which I show below]

1:6 Whenever yet again He may be bringing-in the first-born/prwtotokon <4416> into the inhabited-house He is saying 'let worship! to Him every messenger of God'

Textus Rec.) Hebrews 1:6 otan de palin eisagagh ton prwtotokon eiV thn oikoumenhn legei kai proskunhsatwsan autw panteV aggeloi qeou

Strong's Number G4416 matches the Greek πρωτότοκος (prōtotokos), which occurs 9 times in 9 verses in the Greek concordance of the KJV

4416. prototokos pro-tot-ok'-os from 4413 and the alternate of 5088; first-born (usually as noun, literally or figuratively):--firstbegotten(-born).

Young) Hebrews 1:6 and when again He may bring in the first-born to the world, He saith, `And let them bow before him--all messengers of God;'

Septuagint (LXX) Quotes in the New Testament | Euphemos

Heb. 1:6 / Deut. 32:43 – let all the angels of God worship Him. Hebrew – the Masoretic text omits this phrase from Deut. 32:43.

#3011 used 5 times in 5 verses. 2 times in Romans, 1 time in Philippians, 2 times in Hebrews. A few versions use "winds" instead of spirits.

This verse is from Psalm 104:4 [and coincidentally, the one I use under my username :)]

1:7 And toward indeed the messengers He is saying 'the One making the messengers of Him spirits and the ministers/leitourgouV <3011> of Him of fire flame'

Textus Rec.) Hebrews 1:7 kai proV men touV aggelouV legei o poiwn touV aggelouV autou pneumata kai touV leitourgouV autou puroV floga

Strong's Number G3011 matches the Greek λειτουργός (leitourgos), which occurs 5 times in 5 verses in the Greek concordance of the KJV

2992. laos lah-os' apparently a primary word; a people (in general; thus differing from 1218, which denotes one's own populace):--people.
2041. ergon er'-gon from a primary (but obsolete) ergo (to work); toil (as an effort or occupation); by implication, an act:--deed, doing, labour, work.

#2118 used 1 time in 1 verse. This verse had a lot of variances in it and why I recommend looking at at least 3 or 4 Bible versions, especially for Hebrews.
[I mainly go by the T-R text for now, which the KJV/NKJV uses.]

This word is rendered as "righteousness" in most versions, but according to a lexicon, it symbolizes "straightness". Since it is used only this one time, it is more difficult to get a more accurate rendering I would think. Psalm 45:6.

1:8 Toward yet the Son 'the throne of Thee the God into the age of the age, a scepter of straightness/euquthtoV <2118> a scepter of the kingdom of Thee/Him.

Textus Rec.) Hebrews 1:8 proV de ton uion o qronoV sou o qeoV eiV ton aiwna tou aiwnoV *** * rabdoV *** euquthtoV *h rabdoV thV basileiaV *sou

Strong's Number G2118 matches the Greek εὐθύτης (euthytēs), which occurs 1 time in 1 verse in the Greek concordance of the KJV

2118. euthutes yoo-thoo'-tace from 2117; rectitude:--righteousness.
2117. euthus yoo-thoos' perhaps from 2095 and 5087; straight, i.e. (literally) level, or (figuratively) true; adverbially (of time) at once:--anon, by and by, forthwith, immediately, straightway.

http://www.olivetree.com/cgi-bin/EnglishBible.htm

NKJV) Hebrews 1:8 But to the Son [He says:] "Your throne, O God, [is] forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness [is] the scepter of Your Kingdom.

NASB) Hebrews 1:8 But of the Son He says, "YOUR THRONE, O GOD, IS FOREVER AND EVER, AND THE RIGHTEOUS SCEPTER IS THE SCEPTER OF HIS KINGDOM.

#20 used 5 times in 5 verses. 2 times in Luke [both in Chapt 1], 1 time in Acts {2:46}, 1 time Hebrews and 1 time in Jude {1:24}.

Most versions render this as "gladness" and according to a lexicon, it is a greater form of it. This verse is taken from Psalm 45:7.

Search for 'Genesis 1:1' in the version

NKJV) Hebrews 1:8 But to the Son [He says:] "Your throne, O God, [is] forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness [is] the scepter of Your Kingdom.

NASB) Hebrews 1:8 But of the Son He says, "YOUR THRONE, O GOD, IS FOREVER AND EVER, AND THE RIGHTEOUS SCEPTER IS THE SCEPTER OF HIS KINGDOM.

There is a good Jesus is God verse, contrary to unbelieivers,or JW's

I love that verse, "upholding all things by the word of his power".When you look at the stars, the Almighty is holding them together by His power! Reminds me of the verse "by the word of the Lord were the heavens made, the starry host by the breath of His mouth.

how beautifully awesome and inexplicable it all is.....God bless you :)

i hope you don't mind if i use your post as in my signature, with your name, of course...you worded it beautifully, intermingled with those awesome Bible verses

#4416 used 8 times in 8 verses according to ISA. 1 time in Gospels, Luke 2 [2 times according to KJV concordance..Matt 1, Luke 2], 6 times in Epistles [including 3 times in Hebrews], 1 time in Revelation {1:5}

Amen!

#746 used 55 times in 55 verses according to ISA. Including 6 times in Hebrews and 3/4 times in Revelation. It is taken from Psalm 102:25

What I found interesting is that this particular plural form of the word is used 4 times in NT....Luke 12:11, Ephesians 6:12, Collos 2:15 and in this verse.

Most Bible versions have it in the singular [so I or the ISA could be mistaken.]

Scripture4All - Greek/Hebrew interlinear Bible software

1:10 And Thou according to beginnings/arcaV <746> Lord! the land found and works of the hands of Thee are the heavens

Textus Rec.) Hebrews 1:10 kai su kat arcaV kurie thn ghn eqemeliwsaV kai erga twn ceirwn sou eisin oi ouranoi

Strong's Number G746 matches the Greek ἀρχή (archē), which occurs 58 times in 56 verses in the Greek concordance of the KJV

746. arche ar-khay' from 756; (properly abstract) a commencement, or (concretely) chief (in various applications of order, time, place, or rank):--beginning, corner, (at the, the) first (estate), magistrate, power, principality, principle, rule.

#2440 used 60 times in 58 verses according to ISA. I decided to pick out this particular word in this verse.
This word is used only 4 times outside of the Gospels, Acts and Revelation....... 2 times Hebrews, 1 time James {5:2}, 1 time in 1 Peter {3:3}.

This verse is taking from Psalm 102:26.

Most all versions have "garment" and this verse is also similar to Revelation 6:4.

1:11 They shall be perishing Thou yet remaining and all as cloak/imation <2440> shall be being aged

Textus Rec.) Hebrews 1:11 autoi apolountai su de diameneiV kai panteV wV imation palaiwqhsontai

Strong's Number G2440 matches the Greek ἱμάτιον (himation), which occurs 62 times in 59 verses in the Greek concordance of the KJV

2440.
himation him-at'-ee-on neuter of a presumed derivative of ennumi (to put on); a dress (inner or outer):--apparel, cloke, clothes, garment, raiment, robe, vesture.
