  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Good question. I don't usually use say those things when I swear but I usually say stuff like: "Oh Hell", "Holy *insert not so pleasant word here* or "Holy Baloney". My former boss, a sister who was the principal of this Catholic high school, often said: "Holy Shoot". I wonder if she really meant "Holy Sh*t."

Yeah, that's what I mean.

Like, today at the offic, a fellow Catholic blasphemed something fierce! I very politely asked him: "Hey ___, you are a practicing Cathoilc, right?"
He became very offended and said "Well, I didn't mean it like that!"
I told him that there is no other way to mean what he just said...
Anyway, my point is that if he uses that excuse for himself, how much more for words like "Gosh Darn" and so forth. There is a fundemental problem here I think.

My only problem is, what DOES one say when "the need arises" then? I really want to try and not sin in everything...

Peace in Christ!

We all know that taking the Lord's name in vain is wrong (Even though Cathoilics in my office still do it!), but when you say things like "Jeez", for instance. I can clearly see it's a derivitive of Our Lord's name....is this wrong also?

Thanks!

Peace in Christ.
I always thought, like Anthony, that Geez was a form of Gee. I didn't think that was derived from Jesus. But I guess I really don't know where it originated from. I suppose if one feels convicted when saying it, then they ought not to.

If St. Francis saw the name of God written on a paper anywhere (on the ground, etc..) he would take it to his room for safe keeping - so that even the written name of God would not be defiled.
Our society has pretty much lost touch with reverencing the name of God.

so what about saying 'good heavens'
actually, saying things such as "Jesus Mary and Joseph" or "good heavens" or "Lord have mercy" are short prayers said throughout the day to call our minds to God - or at least meant to be. If someone is saying them negativly though, then they could be blaspheming.

My personal favorite to use when the need arises is 'Argh!' People tend to look at you wierd, but when you hit your hand with a hammer or something drops on your big toe that word always seems to help. It also works well in normal conversation, like say you are buying a shirt, and you think its gonna be cheap, but see it's not. A normal person might just take the Lord's name in vain, while I am in the corner 'argh!-ing' up a storm.

It's really one of the few alternatives around. Most 'polite' words are just derived from curse words, so I have had to resort to making up my own word. :p

I suppose we could say Jimminy Crickets is a form a of saying Jesus Christ, but when are we being too anal retentive? I honestly didn't know that Jeepers Creepers was derived from the saviors name. I think that is kind of farfetched.
