Then, the government should make clear that the national anthem is only the one verse we sing at baseball games.

Since it's the only verse that is ever played at any game or event of any kind, it would seem to be clear enough already.

Some people are presenting what the NFL does as something made federally official.

Except for that kneeling thing.

Not federally official, but certainly disrespectful.

The "black national anthem" is obviously a Christian hymn. Is the "woke" left removing any references to God when they promote it? Aren't these the same people who wanted "under God" removed from the pledge?

It's because I care about black heritage, especially the heritage of black Christians, that I don't want the left appropriating the song.

Lift every voice and sing is a song of faith and has references to God, if sang as it were written. Our National Anthem does not refer to God in the lyrics.

Lift every voice and sing is a song of faith and has references to God, if sang as it were written. Our National Anthem does not refer to God in the lyrics.

The Declaration of Independence mentions God 4 times:

1. GOD IS MENTIONED IN THE FIRST SENTENCE OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE:
“...TO ASSUME AMONG THE POWERS OF THE EARTH, THE SEPARATE AND EQUAL STATION TO WHICH THE LAWS OF NATURE AND OF NATURE'S GOD ENTITLE THEM, A DECENT RESPECT TO THE OPINIONS OF MANKIND REQUIRES THAT THEY SHOULD DECLARE THE CAUSES WHICH IMPEL THEM TO THE SEPARATION.”
The Declaration of Independence immediately refers to "Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God." So, for anyone wondering, "Does the Declaration of Independence mention God?" the clear answer is, "Yes," and the context is centered on the idea that the Lord is the Creator of nature.

It's a fascinating acknowledgment of God's hand as the maker.

But it doesn't end there...

2. THEN, THE DECLARATION GOES ON TO SAY:
“WE HOLD THESE TRUTHS TO BE SELF-EVIDENT, THAT ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL, THAT THEY ARE ENDOWED BY THEIR CREATOR WITH CERTAIN UNALIENABLE RIGHTS, THAT AMONG THESE ARE LIFE, LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS.”
In the second paragraph, the Founding Fathers refer to God as “Creator” and describe the “rights” that God endowed to all women and men: “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” These Declaration of Independence God mentions are powerful in that they tell us that the Lord gives gifts to every human that should not be stripped away.

As mentioned above, the Founding Fathers made it a priority to include sentiments that demonstrate the fact that the Lord wants us to be happy here on Earth.

3. THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE REMINDS US THAT ALL ASPECTS OF OUR LIVES, SPIRITUAL AND POLITICAL, ARE IN GOD’S HANDS.
The last paragraph says:

“...WITH A FIRM RELIANCE ON THE PROTECTION OF DIVINE PROVIDENCE”
The “divine Providence” the Founding Fathers referred to was God and the belief in His protection. The document seems to embrace the idea that our freedom was sealed in His protection and His love. "Providence" speaks exactly to that point: God's protection and humans' wish (and intrinsic need) to rely upon it.

4. THE FINAL MENTION OF THE DIVINE IN THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE IS:
“...WE MUTUALLY PLEDGE TO EACH OTHER OUR LIVES, OUR FORTUNES AND OUR SACRED HONOR.”
As you can see, the Founding Fathers culminated the Declaration of Independence with the reminder that our freedom and citizenship is a sacred honor granted to us by God.

Our country's founding acknowledged God. The current national anthem wasn't adopted until 1931. Much has changed in that time period.

Not sure what that has to do with the song many call the Black National Anthem or the Star Spangled Banner.

You seemed interested in what mentioned God, and what didn't.

Clearly, Yarddog was comparing "Lift Every Voice and Sing" directly with "The Star-Spangled Banner," and not everything under heaven that mentions or does not mention God.

Not sure how you came to that conclusion because there was nothing to indicate that I was speaking about anything other than the Star Spangled Banner or Lift every voice.

Then I guess I better not speak about anything other than your comments.

Ok. So?

What Black Nation has an anthem?

Is this promoting unity or division?

Not sure. I wasn't talking about a Black Nation.

Sounds like as much unity as the Star Spangled Banner.

How can you have a black national anthem if there is no black nation to have an anthem for?

BTW, the Star Spangled Banner was at best ignored six weeks ago. Let alone being racist.
It is just the latest anti America theme disguised as fighting racism.

Easy, have blacks adopt one which speaks to them.

It's only anti-American in you wish it to be.

Can't they hear the Star Spangled Banner?

When "Lift Every Voice and Sing" was written, "The Star-Spangled Banner" held no truth for black people in America. "The Star-Spangled Banner" didn't begin to become true for American black people until the mid-60s.

"Lift Every Voice and Sing" is actually all about the struggle to make "The Star-Spangled Banner" true for black people. In that way, it was properly called at the time "the Negro national anthem," because it was the truth for us that "The Star-Spangled Banner" was not. When I first learned and sang "Lift Every Voice and Sing," it was the truth and "The Star-Spangled Banner" was still a lie.

It is significant historically to American black people. It's the hymn of our struggle in this country. As I've said a couple of times, I do not think it is appropriate to be performed for NFL audiences.
