Instead of the protest that had been planned, a cookout was scheduled, instead.

Wichita Police Department, community activists come together for 'First Steps Cookout'

Sun 6:22 PM, Jul 17, 2016 -- A large crowd gathered in McAdams Park enjoyed free food and the opportunity to have one-on-one conversations with law enforcement.

"Very good vibe. Very good vibe. It's everything I was hoping for," says Wichita Police Chief Gordon Ramsay.

The barbecue took place instead of a planned protest for Sunday night.

Ramsay suggested the event to community leaders following a Black Lives Matter protest in the city last week.

Ramsay had said the barbecue was an opportunity for citizens and police to be introduced and to have positive interaction. Nearly 400 people pledged their intention to attend the event with an RSVP. More than double that amount attended.

A picnic instead of a protest? What will they think up next?

I think it's a misnomer to say Black Lives Matter vs Law Enforcement. It is more accurately Black Lives Matter vs Police Brutality. But they probably wouldn't be having a cook-off in that case. The community and the police working together is always the goal, such a bridge allows us to root out police corruption and brutality.

I think the police should all be reassigned to the local Public Library
and cars sold to the public who need transportation. We will end all
police support in any black areas. They will be at the library reading
about black history if you need any local help, on foot.

This is good news. It's definitely a good thing - positive, non-combatative interaction between the police and communities is a really important step in helping to make the people less afraid of the cops, and more importantly, the reverse.
