Report: Bishop Kidnapped in Iraq Dead
Published: 3/13/08, 8:25 AM EDT

ROME (AP) - A Chaldean Catholic archbishop kidnapped in Iraq last month has been found dead, the news agency of Italian bishops' conference reported on Thursday.

The SIR news agency says Archbishop Paulos Faraj Rahho was found dead near the Iraqi city of Mosul, where he had been abducted.

"Monsignor Rahho is dead. We have found him lifeless near Mosul," the agency quoted the auxiliary bishop of Baghdad, Monsignor Shlemon Warduni, as saying. "The kidnappers had buried him."

Rahho was kidnapped on Feb. 29 soon after he left Mass in Mosul. Three people who had been with him were killed by the kidnappers. Pope Benedict XVI immediately called for his release and said the abduction was an "abominable" act.

The Chaldean church is an Eastern-rite denomination that recognizes the authority of the pope.

Paulos, pray to God for us.

Bism ir Abi wal ibni war rough il Qudos. Amin. + :crosseo:

God of the spirits and of all flesh, who have trampled death and annihilated the devil and given life to your world, may you yourself, O Lord, grant to the soul of your deceased servant Paulos rest in a place of light, a verdant place, a place of freshness, from where suffering, pain and cries are far removed. Do You, O good and compassionate God forgive every fault committed by him in word, work or thought because there is no man who lives and does not sin. You alone are without sin and your justice is justice throughout the ages and your word is truth. Since you, O Christ our God, are the resurrection, the life and the repose of your deceased servant Paulos, we give you glory together with your un-begotten Father and your most holy, good and life-creating Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen.

Terrible news.

What a quagmire Iraq is. His murderers will probably never be found. Just thinking of all the innocent bloodshed there is enough to make someone weep.

Remember what Our Lord said:

"If anyone desires to come after Me, let him take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it." Matt. 16:24,25

St. Paul:

"For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us." Romans 8:18

"Now if we are afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effective for enduring the same sufferings which we also suffer....because we know that as you are partakers of the sufferings, so also you will partake of the consolation." I Cor. 1:6,7

Finally,

"For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to sufer for his sake," Ph. 1:29

That last verse Christians in the US don't think of. They are not in danger of martydom. They have a full table of food, SUVs, and most don't realise what Christians in Palestine and Africa go through. Orthodox have been fighting this fight since 1453, and in Russia since 1917.

Earlier than that. Since 570 when Muhammad was born.

The Assyrians have been through much more than what any of us can imagine.
