It seems that those who make the computer chips use chemicals in their making that cause abortions among the working women in the factories.

Once this was discovered to be a serious problem in the US, the chip makers basically moved the problem to third world countries instead of changing the way computer chips are made.

So what is the ethical thing to do with this situation? Regulate big business . . . . and we all know how much some on the right think that is a travesty . . . or allow such induced abortions to continue?

First look: does it count as gender discrimination to only hire men for the jobs that will handle these chemicals, then?

The only other alternative - besides literally re-inventing the computer - is to make the risk (guarantee?) public knowledge, especially among everyone who works there, so that only women who are willing to take the risk would be in harm's way. We all know there are some women who might even line up.

Electronics made in China break really quickly, too.

....

After reading the article: Never mind; I'm an idiot.
That the risks could persist overseas was flagged more than two decades ago by the Johns Hopkins researchers working at IBM. They knew that EGEs were cheap, effective, and abundantly available and that less-dangerous alternatives were far more expensive. Their published report cited the higher costs of safety and specifically warned that could mean the dangers would persist overseas.
You guys are right; that is all it is.

It is up to those third world countries to solve the issue. Not us.

Do you think a law requiring imported goods were produced in a manner safe to the workers making it would be . . . ok to pass?

Depends on the other conditions. I believe that idea in and of itself is fine, yes.

First off, not to nitpick, but nobody is causing abortions, they are causing miscarriages. Those are very very different.

Second off, it's very disappointing that companies care more about profits than the health of its employees.

A miscarriage is a spontaneous abortion. If it has a human cause, it is an induced abortion. And the US businesses would say it is not their own employees, it is the employees of those foreign companies that are so careless, these days . . . so are the US businesses now innocent? I say they are not.
