It's a disaster.

I guess the one positive thing I can credit Biden for is at least now he has a penitent tone rather than smirking and joking, or trying to boldly spin things as a success or trying to lay all the mismanagement on Trump for decisions he actually made and signed off on, e.g. Trump did not give away Bagram, nor did he have that in his plans etc.

IF Biden had that tone when this stuff broke out 2 weeks back there would be more good will and his administration less damaged.

Unlike Biden Trump actually listened and deferred to his generals, even when his generals were lying to him, and allowed them to talk him out a withdrawal multiple times.

Trump ordered a force reduction of a 1000 combat troops last year. The generals did not do it, but simply reclassified the troops as "Special Operations" to take them off the books to give the illusion of following orders.

But that being said usually the advice from such folks is good like "lets not give up this Airforce base till the end...."

Why were Americans in Afghanistan giving the circumstances? Why didn’t they leave sooner?

There are hundreds of Americans who haven't even decided yet if they want to leave.

The truth is, they were told nearly a year ago that this would be the year of withdrawal. Whatever date had been set, no matter how much time in advance the warning had been given, there would still be thousands of Americans delaying past that time.

There was no way withdrawal was not going to be a goatrope, regardless which president attempted it...although Obama had the best opportunity.

• Unlike his predecessor, his Cabinet is composed of experienced, capable people--not lobbyists and campaign contributors.
• He listens to his advisors. He reads his briefings.
• He brought his rosary in the situation room when Bin Laden was captured. He knows which side of the Bible is the top.

Maybe Biden does not want to promise what he can't guarantee.

Actually, you don't know that everything would have gone smooth, inasmuch as it never happened.

What would not have gone smooth for anyone: Not all Americans would have queued up as desired for evacuation under anyone's plan because Americans are contrary like that.

What would not have gone smooth for anyone: Any kind of combat, because no operational plan has ever survived contact with the enemy. "Combat' and "smooth" are mutually exclusive propositions.
