So, president Biden decides to install a travel ban regarding the new COVID variant in South Africa.

This flies in the face of what he said before about travel bans.

On Jan. 31, 2020, then-President Donald Trump declared a public health emergency in response to the global COVID-19 outbreak and temporarily suspended the entry of travelers from China. A day later, then-candidate Biden responded by saying Trump was xenophobic, "We are in the midst of a crisis with the coronavirus. We need to lead the way with science — not Donald Trump's record of hysteria, xenophobia, and fear-mongering. He is the worst possible person to lead our country through a global health emergency."

"A wall will not stop the coronavirus. Banning all travel from Europe — or any other part of the world — will not stop it. This disease could impact every nation and any person on the planet — and we need a plan to combat it."

In January 2020, when Trump added new immigration restrictions on six African and Asian countries — Nigeria, Myanmar, Kyrgyzstan, Eritrea, Sudan, and Tanzania — Democrats claimed the policy was "driven by hate."

Biden tweeted, "Trump further diminished the U.S. in the eyes of the world by expanding his travel ban. This new 'African Ban,' is designed to make it harder for black and brown people to immigrate to the United States. It's a disgrace, and we cannot let him succeed."

So now he has changed his mind on this and he hinks travel.bans are needed. Yet the Democrats, media and others in the left excoriated Trump for it.

Are they going to do the same for Biden? Hypocrisy at its finest. AGAIN!

Trump was seen as xenophobic for other and different reasons prior to any covid related travel bans.

Trump’s ban on travel from China was often hailed by his supporters as decisive leadership early in the first year of the pandemic. Do you feel that way about Biden’s travel ban?

This thread is not about the rightness or wrongness of a travel ban. It's about the hypocrisy of the left in this country who accused Trump of xenophobia for his travel bans, but say nothing about Bidens.

Including Biden himself. What a crock.

I say keep travel between South Africa and the US open. I mean, what's the problem?
Well you could have a point in helping Democratic Party fortunes. Potential GOP voters seem more likely to pass away from COVID since they are less inclined to get vaccinated.

Statistically, that is not true. Those least inclined to get vaccinated are adults under the age of 30, African Americans who distrust the vaccine due to historical reasons, rural conservatives who think the government is trying to control them, and some extremist religious types who think vaccines are the mark of the beast or something related.

The first two are mostly Democrat. The last two are conservative. And there is a random sampling of other reasons that people don't get vaccinated for. (ie. Too busy, don't care, I've already had the virus, etc.)

In the end, there is statistically no difference in the percentage of Democrats or Republicans that choose to get the virus or not get it.

I read a report this morning the new variant is mild. At this point it is a rumor. I wait for more data.

Both Presidents made promises they could not keep. They took on more national debt than we can repay. Inflation is worse for all the big government spending that has accelerated this past year.

This Trump travel ban had nothing to do with COVID-19. This was an extension of Trump's totally-not-a-Muslim travel ban. And that is the context of Biden's response.

There are currently no known cases of omicron in the US. I've seen that travel bans might conceivably delay its arrival by a few weeks. In that time, we'll know a lot more about the variant and how we may need to respond.

As for what Biden said about Trump's travel reduction from China due to COVID-19:

In April, [Biden's] campaign said he supported travel restrictions if “guided by medical experts.”

Cmon. Joe makes promises and breaks promises days later. Joe wasn't going to leave American behind in Afghanistan.

Definitely a hypocrite... There's nothing the democratic party does however that isn't a fine display of hypocrisy though. Certainly this isn't the only example.

What gets me though is the level of fear we see in those who are vaccinated.. there's people who've been fully vaccinated plus having had booster shots asking for prayers over potential exposure.

I don't ask prayer unless something is really really bad... Life threatening or desperate need for perseverance type requests.. I don't understand that level of fear or concern - I likely wouldn't be that worried even if I was sick unless I was knocking on death's door..

And we see that everywhere we go, among the vaccinated. Which to me is really shocking. The vaccines were supposed to be a (medical) comfort to people and all you have are politicians and media types fear mongering, and people fall for it.

Now that we have a vaccine available to those who want it no, I actually don't.

Initially it was warranted, back when we didn't so much as know how to treat the disease.. but it's a very different situation now, what with the availability of a vaccine and more than adequate treatment capabilities...

I see no need at this point in time to close our travel borders.

Trump claimed travel ban and told a different story on his twitter page. Presidents are supposed to do their job. And not play the poor baby game.

For Donald, is it a game?

Joe Biden was privet citizen back in Jan 2020. Joe Biden didn’t get daily PDB like Trump did so Joe Biden didn’t know what is going on other then what Trump said in public.

This is what Trump said about COVID-19 back in Jan -Feb 2020

"We have it totally under control. It's one person coming in from China, and we have it under control. It's going to be just fine," . Trump Jan 22, 2020

“China has been working very hard to contain the Coronavirus. The United States greatly appreciates their efforts and transparency. It will all work out well. In particular, on behalf of the American People, I want to thank President Xi!” Trump Jan 24, 2020

“I think the virus is going to be—it’s going to be fine.” Trump Feb 10, 2020

“Looks like by April, you know in theory when it gets a little warmer, it miraculously goes away.” Trump Feb 10, 2020

“The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA… the Stock Market starting to look very good to me!” Trump , Feb 24, 2020

"It's going to disappear. One day — it's like a miracle — it will disappear," Trump Feb 27, 2020

So in one hand Trump tell the country – nothing to see here, Coronavirus is going away magickly, only one case in USA and it will just miraculously goes away , and then impose travel ban. If covid-19 is not a threat, if covid-19 going away magickly then why are you putting travel ban? Trump lied to the country for months and now Biden is the hypocrite?
