Would have been a mistake under Trump, will be a mistake under Biden. If the USA pulls out in 2021, in 2023 there will be no area in afghanistan not under the control of the taliban. Women will be forced out of public life and schools and other religions will be oppressed, while a new generation of west-hating extremists grows up.

If that is what the Afghans want their country to be like it is none of the business of the United States of America.

It's not what the majority of Afghans want for their country.

It's what the extremists with guns want for their country.

That would also be the case if we pulled out in 2023, 2025 or 2030. Short of a full scale invasion and occupation of the entire country followed by a multi generation reworking of their society at gun point there is no scenario that does not result in the country being a brutal medieval back water.

The latest crop of enlisted we sent over there were not born when we first invaded the bloody place for crying out loud.

...go back to the Powell Doctrine:

Define an achievable military mission including an exit strategy. Get out.
We can't impose our will on other countries.

What is the excuse for not making the deadline?
If the current administration had met this deadline, that would have tacitly acknowledged that President Trump had been successful with one more of his peace initiatives.

When the Biden or Harris government does finally end the campaign in Afghanistan--if ever--it will claim that as one of its own accomplishments.

I think pulling out is a mistake personally. Especially since the withdrawal wasn't negotiated with the actual government of Afghanistan, but rather with the Taliban.
Who’s (going to be) running things after we leave?

The Afghan version of the Pentagon Papers....

At War with the Truth

“We were devoid of a fundamental understanding of Afghanistan — we didn’t know what we were doing,” Douglas Lute, a three-star Army general who served as the White House’s Afghan war czar during the Bush and Obama administrations, told government interviewers in 2015. He added: “What are we trying to do here? We didn’t have the foggiest notion of what we were undertaking.”

“If the American people knew the magnitude of this dysfunction . . . 2,400 lives lost,” Lute added, blaming the deaths of U.S. military personnel on bureaucratic breakdowns among Congress, the Pentagon and the State Department. “Who will say this was in vain?”

Since 2001, more than 775,000 U.S. troops have deployed to Afghanistan, many repeatedly. Of those, 2,300 died there and 20,589 were wounded in action, according to Defense Department figures.

I will give Joe props for this if he gets it done and I think Trump will probably kick himself for this. But it is not his fault, the Pentagon lied to him and the media did its share of fear mongering, as I mentioned a month ago in a thread where I posted this video. (The Pentagon pretended to lower troop levels by reclassifying 1000 troops as special forces so they would be off the books)

Afghanistan has a elected civilian government, headed by a President. The country is notably corrupt however, especially the Afghan National Police, who are the main people fighting the Taliban. And the thing that is problematic to me is that the peace deal that was signed by the US last year was signed by the US and the Taliban, but the Afghan national government had no say in it, even though there were several aspects of it they were supposed to follow.

I must quibble a bit here. We can impose our will on any country, we can win any war almost instantly. We are not, rightly, willing to pay the price or face the literal and metaphorical fall out of doing so.

The United States is the reason the country is unstable though. And the Taliban did give shelter to AQ, which arguably makes 9/11 an act of war against us. I just as soon we not allow that to potentially happen again.
