For a while Nixon had a fake football (nuclear suitcase) so he couldn't start a war. One wonders if Trump ever was allowed to be near the real football. I'd be happier if Biden had a fake football.

Some might question if joe knows what the football is....

If that is even true, how stupid did they look when he ended the Vietnam war.

Welcome to the echo chamber of Trumpism.

Where the political potshots at Biden are trumped-up and the facts don't matter.
So far, it looks like the comments have been offered with Biden's own description of a person who wants to be a dictator in mind.

I am yet to see a link where it says Biden didn’t inform congress, nor I see a link which says VP was not informed. In another word the Subject line is misleading.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki released a statement Friday afternoon that also directly contradicted Senate Democrats, reading, “The Department of Defense briefed Congressional leadership before the action last night. The Administration has been briefing the Hill at the Member– and staff– level today. There will be a full classified briefing early next week at the latest.”
Biden Defense Spokesperson Refutes Democratic Senators On Air Strikes: ‘There Was A Notification Process’

PBS reported that the Biden administration notified Congressional leaders but did not notify all committees. It's normal for a president to also notify pertinent committees as well. However, that "normal" procedure hasn't been followed in years...

President Donald Trump said Sunday morning that he did not notify members of Congress ahead of the raid on Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi out of fear of leaks that could put special forces in danger.

The president told members of his administration to keep the raid secret and not notify Congress that special forces killed Baghdadi on Saturday night in northern Syria. Trump said he was in the process of notifying lawmakers about the details surrounding the ISIS leader’s death.
Trump Says He Didn’t Notify Congress Of al-Baghdadi Raid Out Of Fear Of Leaks

I'm thinking that's yet another Trump legacy that's unacceptable and needs to be erased. Biden seems to have only partially addressed that problem by notifying Congressional leaders before the strike. It's not clear if Harris was notified or not, but it's very clear that Biden is making the decisions.

Thank you for the post. So it seems like the Op completely mislead in his Subject line.

US aggression against Syria is wrong - regardless of who is in the White House, or whether Congress was consulted. The US needs to leave Syria alone, period, full stop.

They killed American contractors and wounded our soldiers.

What should our response have been?

If that is even true, how stupid did they look when he ended the Vietnam war.

Toward the end of Watergate, Nixon had started drinking heavily, and was heard to have suggested some Trump-like ideas (although there's no evidence he actually seriously considered an insurrection to save himself). Some people in his cabinet made it clear to the Pentagon that they were to do nothing he ordered without discussing it with the Sec. of State first.

This was long after Nixon agreed with North Vietnam that he would withdraw all American forces from S. Vietnam. It was the North Vietnamese Army that shortly after that, ended the Vietnam War.

It was precisely the right move. For the reasons you state. But it was perfect to do it in Syria. Iraq is trying to get some kind of normalcy with Iran, and if we had killed Iranian-supported militia in Iraq, that would have been a problem for our Iraqi allies.

On the other hand, taking out Iranian assets in Syria sent a message to the Mullahs from Biden that "we can find you and get you whenever we must" while not complicating the relationship of Shiite Iraq with Shiite Iran.

Nice call, Mr. President. But next time, formally advise congressional committee chairmen, not just congressional leaders. That was the way these things were done before the last administration, and you should go back to that practice.

LOL

Two nations in conflict. The conflict doesn’t end without BOTH working out peace.

Nixon was the one who stopped the never ending increase of men and machinery being sent to a police action. The previous three Democrats increased the war, Nixon through his Administration brought it to a close

In the case of the South Vietnamese army, it was mostly "get a helicopter out to a U.S. carrier." I had a friend, an ARVN pilot, who resorted to using diesel fuel in a helicopter to get to a carrier when all the aviation fuel was gone. Another friend who wasn't so lucky, spent some time in a camp before managing to get his family out of the country.

I don't think there was a surrender ceremony when the NVA rolled into Saigon.

Actually, I got caught up in Nixon's escalation of the war. I knew flight crews who never made it home after Nixon ramped up bombing including heavy bombardment of the North.

But he was smart enough to realize when that failed, that he had to give up and end U.S. participation in the conflict. Which he did. It didn't end the war, it just ended our part in it.

Get out. The only winning move there is not to play.

It is a great line from a classic movie! Love War Games!

But here we are - our citizens are dead. Are you saying the proper response to them being murdered it to turn and leave?

BTW, I am with you and the former President on pulling our troops out of Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.

The problem in getting out, when our people are killed, is that eventually, there will no longer be any place to run.

When Trump nailed Syrian targets when they figured it was safe to start using chemical weapons again, that was perfect. And it stopped just as American airstrikes on Obama's watch caused that to stop. I only wish he had been more forceful about defending American interests overseas. Force isn't the only way to deal with our enemies, but it is sometimes the only sensible option.
