Jeff Bezos is exerting more influence over the content of The Washington Post opinion pages, as he announced that the editorials will now focus on “defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets.”

“We’ll cover other topics too of course, but viewpoints opposing those pillars will be left to be published by others,” Bezos wrote in a memo to staffers this morning.

lol, it's always good to see conservatives encouraging and engaging in a robust exchange of ideas. Maybe Bezos has realized that he can't compete with the NY Times and has decided to pivot towards competing with the Washington Times.

It makes sense that businessmen are resisting the reigning "progressive" ideology.
The rich who have gotten rich under a system are always going to be loathe to change that system in any meaningful way.

It's not only Bezos who's self-serving but yes, he seems to be leaning right I think of all these guys as prostitutes for the money.
You need to stop making sense or I am going to start agreeing with you. :p

I think some of these CEOs have been somewhat emboldened/empowered to do the things they wanted to do 5-10 years ago, but didn't do out of fear of getting cancelled and/or being called up to get grilled by senators like Meta, Google, and Twitter did back then.

The dynamic went from "If I go along with what the lion wants, the lion will eat me last" to "oh, the culture has changed a bit, now I don't have to get eaten at all...screw you lion!"

Of all of the things that concerns me about Bezos, this one actually ranks pretty low. Ultimately WaPo will still be a left-leaning publication, but they may even pick up a few new readers if they actually stop being one-sided.

The concerns about Bezos have been, and still are, the way Amazon strains the US Postal Service.

In case you've enjoyed any gift articles from WaPo I've shared... my spouse has canceled the subscription.

We can't endorse Kamala for president, that would be taking sides.
We can't offer both sides of these issues, only one side must be defended.

Good for you. We should all take a stand against liberty and freedom.

The culture is changing. What did Dylan say? "You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows."
Not really. But there are people who are trying to do more to dictate how the culture is changing. And I think we have opposing views on who is doing that.

Bezos is turning the Post into just another tawdry rag that will just parrot the corporat doublespeak that he and his cronies favor. Sad legacy for a great newspaper.

Biden was right to warn Americans in his departing address about the dangers of billionaire oligarchs and their power.

Not money... it's about power trips for those guys. They are already so obscenely wealthy they don't even have to care about money, beyond the access to power that it brings them.

With Bezos (and others like Zuckerburg) its probably more of "left-libertarian" that was getting scratched. Sure, they're all fine with the modern social view until they might get taxed (or regulated).

They weren't really on the Left. Only in the bizarro world of American politics. They were doing the typical billionaire thing, only with chameleon skin. They were woke when it was fashionable, but they didn't care about deeper issues of inequality or justice beyond mouthing pious platitudes in their corporate propaganda.

The freedom Bezos or Zuckerburg believe in is the freedom for billionaires to make lots of money and amass large amounts of power. It isn't consonant with Christian notions of freedom at all, which is doing justice and loving mercy. It has nothing to do with how many people bend the knee to your whims and kiss your ring. That is simply being a slave to the kingdom of the flesh and Satan.

"Left-libertarian" as opposed to "right-libertarian" (like Rand Paul). What we used to call "socially liberal" probably with a bit of "fiscally conservative". (A classic combination.) Toss in a bit of libertarian

Sometimes we characterize them as "anarcho-capitalists", though "techno-authoritarians" seems a lot closer these days.

None of which interests me.
