Ben and childbirth

Just a random comment, but somehow until last night I had never put this together. Ben cares about women giving birth on the island without dying. So much so, in fact, that Richard lamented that his priorities were wrong (paraphrased).

The reason? Ben's mother died while giving birth to him, a fact that his father apparently threw in his face regularly. So for Ben, it's very personal.

Yeah that makes me wonder if it's part of the "fate" of the island that Ben of all people would be brought to it.

Good catch - another question... Did women always die on the island during childbirth - or was it only after the Purge?
