Job 40
15 "Look at Behemoth, which I made just as I made you; it eats grass like an ox. 16Its strength is in its loins, and its power in the muscles of its belly. 17It makes its tail stiff like a cedar; the sinews of its thighs are knit together. 18Its bones are tubes of bronze, its limbs like bars of iron. 19"It is the first of the great acts of God-- only its Maker can approach it with the sword.

I have often heard that this animal may be a hippo, or elephant... my question concerns these verses. Neither the hippo or elephant have a tail as stiff as cedar. Nor is the strength of a hippo in it's loins. What other animal could fit this description?

Elephants are also able to be ridden. Maybe Maker is mistranslated or something I don't know... but no animal alive that I know of fits this description. Any thoughts?

Tail and Loins may be euphamisms for other body parts.

Also, "stiff like a cedar" doesn't mean "as big as a cedar" or "as long as a cedar". How "stiff" is a hippo or elephants tail? My guess is, very stiff. Maybe it just means "backside". How stiff is a hippos backside?

If you take these into concideration, along with other problems in terminology that might arise in translation, the hippo fits quite well (and was an animal that lived in the region in question).

If you also take into concideration that in the next chapter, the verses speak of an animal that breathes fire from its mouth and nose, which doesn't match any known animal, living or extinct, then it could be that both of these animals are mythological.

Hippos are considered by many to be the most dangerous animals in Africa. The third-heaviest creature on land (behind elephants and white rhinos), the hippo is awkward but deceptively fast, and people have learned to be wary around them. Their clumsiness changes to grace when they swim underwater. Called the 'river horse' by the ancient Greeks, these large, lumbering beasts are actually related more closely to pigs than to horses.

All hippos eat plants. They graze by grabbing grass with their lips--which are 2 feet wide! They swing their heads to one side, tearing off the grass at its roots. Their razor sharp teeth are used primarily to frighten away predators and, when necessary, to fight each other for control of a herd or mudhole. Despite their usually gentle nature, their teeth and speed make them fearsome to other animals.

I don't know if I would be able to say which dinosaur this passage could be talking about - but I agree that a dinosaur might the subject matter. The fact is that God created all things in six days - dinosaurs and humans existed at the same time...bohemoth would seem to fit the build of a dinosaur.

God killed them off, just like the Bible tells us.

With a combination of volcanic activity, asteroid impact, disease and environmental changes 66 million years ago.

God didn't say anything about that, man did. It is your free choice where you want to place your faith. I choose to put my faith with God. He has NEVER failed me, men have.

Still wondering if the description of a fire breathing animal in Job is a dinosaur as well. Must have been tough to have one of those on a wooden ark!

According to the Bible, this was an aquatic creature, therefore it did not need to be on the ark. By the way, there were 2 of each animal (male and female) on the ark.

If it was aquatic then it sure wasn't a dinosaur.

Why are you always so rude? Sort out your attitude, no one here wants to listen to you insult them, it just shows you have no counter-arguement, but you don't want to look stupid by not saying anything.

An aquatic, fire breathing animal. Okay.

Was the flood fresh water or salt? Cause if it was fresh water all the marine animals would have died, and visa versa. How did the blind marsupial mole get back to Australia from the arc? How did the wingless Kergueluen Island butterfly get to its' remote island in the south seas? Could Teredo (shipworm) clams have caught a ride on the arc - good thing they didn't destroy the timbers.

Who said this was a dinosaur?? What does it matter anyway? Diplodocus (behemoth) has been extinct for thousands of years. Only recently have we found its remains. This Leviathan (or its remains) could be gone, never to be found again, or maybe it is well hidden. When the time is right, we will know what it is.

The point that the Bible is making is that God can create an animal wherever and whenever He pleases and He can also destroy it no matter its size.
