Younger people no longer care about the reasons people used to be involved in churches, which often was about social respectability/conformity more than truth (1950's religion, for instance, valued belonging a great deal).
While lack of interest is often mentioned the real culprit is absence of need. Few people need the church; need to fellowship, etc. The social elements that were addressed in communion are fulfilled elsewhere or in different ways. Religion brings its own idiosyncrasies and stresses. Many want no part of that.
