  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Do Baptist generally believe that being obsessed with someone, like a famous person, is a sin? Is it a form of idolatry and how so, if it is idolatry? I don't understand. It seems rather silly, but "hear" me out. I know that I have obsessive thoughts about a certain actor who you may already know about. Anyways, I am feeling better and I have prayed about it. How important is renewal of the mind when it comes to this issue?

The Bible is clear that obsession over anything is idolatry and that to put anything before our relationship and time with God is idolatry. God comes first everything else comes after. So we have to make sure we are prioritizing our time and lives. Everyones idols are different we all feel convicted on different things. If your obsession with this actor is being laid on your heart chances are that is a conviction from God. You may need to evaluate this in your life and make sure you are putting God first in everything. Idolatry is something we are all guilty of but it can be turned around. =]

Obsession is sin. Being attracted to a person, isn't.

Define "renewal of the mind" for me, and then I will answer...

Romans 12 says to be transformed by the renewal of the mind. I am not sure about renewal of the mind and what it means but I feel that transformation is very important to believers. I think that my obsession may be idolatry but I am not sure if Baptists would have one position or if Catholics were to have another position on what constitutes idolatry. I wonder what a Baptist would have to say about someone have a crush on an actor that I am attracted to, regardless of the reason. I went to see my therapist today and even though she didn't say about the idolatry, I told her about the obsession at hand and what her solution is.
