I swear I checked to see if there was a thread about this already. SummerMadness has scooped me twice today.

McCowns was handcuffed and put in the back of a Brooklyn Police cruiser. Minutes after being arrested, police were able to get in contact with McCowns employer who confirmed the check was real and that McCowns is an employee.

We reached out to the bank. A bank rep said there have been 11 cases of fraud at this branch in just the last few months. The rep said the tellers were being hyper vigilant.

In a full statement, Huntington stated:

“We sincerely apologize to Mr. McCowns for this extremely unfortunate event. We accept responsibility for contacting the police as well as our own interactions with Mr. McCowns. Anyone who walks into a Huntington branch should feel welcomed. Regrettably, that did not occur in this instance and we are very sorry. We hold ourselves accountable to the highest ethical standards in how we operate, hire and train colleagues, and interact with the communities we have the privilege of serving.”

This is helping the direction along for a cashless-checkless-cardless society....

16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six. - Revelation 13

Looks to me like the Police did well this time. The bank however should be held accountable if the report is accurate. The news item says they told the police that the man was trying to fraudulently cash a check and that his information did not match their records. The huge issue there is he was NOT a customer so the bank had no records to match.

The news item also says they tried to reach his employer but got no answer. OK cause for some suspicion, but they could have verified that the number was valid with an online lookup. One would hope a financial institution would be able to do that.

But the huge item that makes this look like racial profiling is that they doubted he made that much. Sorry but thinking that just over $1000 left after deductions is not that high a number. If it were $10,000 that is different, one would expect someone making that much to already have a bank account.

Also worth noting is that he left peacefully and then the bank called 911. He did everything right, the bank did a lot wrong.

Oh almost forgot, the police got through to his employer in just a few minutes. Guess the cops have better phone service.

He also gave two forms of id and a fingerprint.
If he isn't are the tellers still racist? Aren't there any black American tellers?

I fully support Mr. McCowns in this. Some of my best friends are Irish.

Full disclosure: Some of my best friends are not Irish.

Fuller disclosure: I don't really have any friends.

Well, apart from this bit - "McCowns was handcuffed and put in the back of a Brooklyn Police cruiser"

What are they supposed to do when they are called by a bank and told someone is trying to pass a fraudulent check?

That is why the bank should be taken to task and perhaps have charges files against them for making a false police report.

This exactly. Cops were correct in this situation, it is the bank that is liable and should be held accountable. They don't get to say "Whoopsies sorry our bad..." They lied to police and a man got arrested. What if some hotheaded cop showed up and the situation escalated beyond control and the man got hurt or killed??

There is this device called a check scanner. Every single bank has one, they just zip your check right through and it scans it. This proves whether the check is real or not. The man presented two forms of ID and a fingerprint-- thus you know who you are dealing with. There is no reason the cops should have gotten involved. If anything, the man shouldn't have left. IIRC, a bank is required by law to honor any of their checks that is brought to them. If you have proper ID and present a bank's check to said bank they MUST cash it. Banks are insured by the FDIC for a reason. All of the above is why the cops should have never been called.

Talk to the person and the bank? Figure out whether a crime has been committed?

Why are handcuffs needed?

Why do hospitals almost always discharge patients and wheel them out in a wheelchair? Because it does no harm if the patient could walk, but if they cannot (and such is not always visible) it does can do huge harm.

Same here.

The difference is that the hospital is doing it for the benefit of the patient. The cops handcuffing someone and tossing them into their car are not.

Garbage. The hospital is not forcing a discharged patient to use a wheelchair for the benefit of the patient. And they do pretty much force them.

Garbage. The hospital is not forcing a discharged patient to use a wheelchair for the benefit of the patient. And they do pretty much force them.

So in other words, what you're attempting to say is that handcuffing an innocent person and throwing him in a police car is just cops trying to make things better for cops.

Well, you've nicely summed up so much of what is wrong with policing in America these days.
