• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

"the only real diff. that I can find between these two are the vocal."
Instead of looking for "Autism", look for ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorder - ASD).

Autism isnt a condition, rather, its a 'spectrum' or a range of behavioural activities that go from 'High functioning' to 'Low functioning' (severe autism). Now picture that spectrum like a graphic equaliser on your stero, with different 'charecteristics/traits', much the same way diffrent 'bands/wavelengths'. Like your graphic equaliser, the number of 'bands' you could examine is potentially infinate.

Since we all display behavioural traits, we ALL fall somewhere within the ASD spectrum. For example, someone might have a high dislike of certain smells or textures. Someone else might have a low understanding of personal space. But if our behaviour is 'extreme' in one or more traits, then the chances are we'de be medically diagnosed as autistic. Though these two folk exhibit different behaviours, they both have ASD. In otherwords, there both Autistic. To complicate matters, within the spectrum there are a number of different sub-categories, but there areas tend to overlap. So though they exhibit different traits, they could both have Aspergers Syndrome (AS).

If its clear as mud dont worry; the 'professionals' have a hard time too. My son has Semantic Pragmatic Disorder (SPD). Since she was about to retire, his specialist asked us whether we would like to change her diagnosise to 'Aspergers' or 'Autistic'. Not because her diagnosise was wrong, but because employees of health/welfare/education departments know very little (zilch) about SPD, so we might find a, er, better spirit of co-operation if she diagnosed something that was 'better known'. The overlap between SPD and Aspergers is so great that outside of medical journals, youd be hard pushed to tell the difference.

Hope this helps...

Peace
