I see what you mean. It's hard to define. But the masculinity I'm referring to is unforced. My father is in is 80s. Growing up, it seemed that he and my uncles were naturally masculine, even if they weren't physically imposing. My father is 5' 9'' and on the thin side, but he had (and has) an edge to him that men seem to lack now.

I think it's because today individuality is more accepted, that's why you perceive men as lacking that "edge". It's still far from perfect, but forcing people to conform to gender roles that might be unnatural for them is slowly going away. If someone's naturally masculine, he will still be masculine even without that kind of social pressure. And if someone's not, he can be free to be himself, and that can mean not having that "edge".
