DOJ sends 35 lawyers, 18 judges to border to stop illegal immigrant caravan

By Stephen Dinan - The Washington Times - Wednesday, May 2, 2018

Attorney General Jeff Sessions deployed dozens of new prosecutors and 18 more immigration judges down to the U.S.-Mexico border Wednesday to handle the illegal immigrant caravan and to try to head off another summertime surge of border jumpers.

The additional lawyers should give the government capacity to file more criminal charges as a deterrent to illegal immigrants, and the added judges will help speed decisions on asylum claims like the ones the caravan participants say they’re making.

“We are not going to let this country be overwhelmed. People are not going to caravan or otherwise stampede our border,” Mr. Sessions said.

His move is the latest step by an administration that sees the caravan as a direct challenge to President Trump’s promises of border security.

Homeland Security and Justice Department officials have promised to take an increasingly tough line on illegal immigrants nabbed at the border.

Not to nit pick, but the caravan is a group of refugees, not illegals. Illegals sneak across the border in the dead of night; they don't line up at the door and ask to be let in.

Providing more administrators so that the process can move more smoothly and efficiently seems like a good idea but hardly anything earth shattering. Thats whether we favor mass immigration or oppose it.

Facts are only 25% in the past have received political asylum. After sifting through the stories by the courts that's about the percentage that turn out to be true.

So approximately 75% of the Caravan should find a home in Mexico, which has been offered to them.

They may not all come here we are full at this time. Courts overloaded. No monies to build more courthouses or hire judges.

Either way it's a good idea for everyone involved including the refugees.

You'll have to admit that the DOJ is putting a great spin on it, just the thing to appeal to Trump's nativist base.

Indeed -- spin the truth until it gets dizzy and passes out... then there nothing left to contradict the Narrative.

At least we agree that the notion that the caravan is "a direct challenge to President Trump’s promises of border security," is utterly ludicrous, correct?

They have the legal right to apply, even if there is a high chance they won't be granted asylum. And here's a crazy idea, maybe instead of screaming for money to build a wall, maybe the President could use some of that to hire more immigration judges.

We don't need any new judges.
We already let in 1.1 million people a year.
Don't need no more!

Best to stop taking jobs away from the young black men.

Yes, yes we do need more immigration judges. Do you know how large the backlog is right now?

I'm a retired equipment technician that specialized in water. We don't open the valve more when we are already getting what we need. It's not good to be wasteful with our resources.

The caravan is a news media storm that is challenging the Trump Admin, who you kidding!

This is the start of the border battle, as the water is being tested.

Give it a week, we will see the development, ole sessions is right on point, 35 prosecuting lawyers and 18 judges!

If 10 sneak past the crowd, possibly you can put em up for 30 years?

That will help the American 20 Trillion dollar debt, and already 47 million migrants in America today

If ole Trump & Sessions stand firm, It's gonna send a ringing message out to the migrant seekers, American border is closed for business!

Then why do you want to build a wall instead of making sure we have the resources to already enforce the laws on the books? One of which grants people the right to apply for asylum.

tested, how?

Clearly we need more...

If 10 sneak past the crowd, possibly you can put em up for 30 years?

If 10 were planning on sneaking in, what do they need the crowd for? If anything, the crowd -- and the media attention focused on them -- would make "sneaking" difficult or even impossible... don't you think?

Well Bob I agree, no new Judges needed, thanks to operation streamline!

Wikipedia: Operation Streamline
is a joint initiative of the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice in the United States, started in 2005, that adopts a "zero-tolerance" approach to unauthorized border-crossing by engaging in criminal prosecution of those engaging in it. Up to 70 people are tried at the same time, sometimes wearing shackles in the courtroom. Entering without inspection is a misdemeanor, and re-entering after deportation is a felony.

Bundling and rapid processing of cases
Another distinguishing feature of Operation Streamline is that cases are not heard individually, but rather in large groups, with many people caught crossing the border together generally being processed in one case.[2][9] According to a New York Times report, a single court case in Tucson, Arizona can have up to 70 defendants, the upper limit being set by the physical capacity of the court. The time taken to decide the cases varies between 30 minutes (or 25 seconds per defendant) and 2 hours 35 minutes (or a little over 2 minutes per defendant).

Yeh, that is a bad idea. Immigration judges and courts do not exist in order to process just anyone who is found to be in the country illegally. And that presumes that they have been found--which is something that immigration judges and courts also do not do.

You mean like open the $$$$$ valve up all the way, so social security, State and Federal budgets will be as empty as the supply tank they came out of?

Oh I mean the federal debt of 20 trillion to pass on to our children, and great grand children.

California is just 400 Billion in debt, chump change, float some more debt bonds, yeah we need more immigrants to strain social services and employment ranks?

The Session team is in huddle, the decision will be on the local news any time now? :groupray:
