• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Very good article! A must read for everyone, for sure. My autistic son loves shaking hands with people in church. I think it helps him to feel included and most people enjoy shaking hands with him, too! He'll also give you a high 5 if that's your preference. :)

Hi Lilac,
I agree, everyone should read this article, in particular church leaders. I was very interested to read about your son. What age is he? You say he loves to shake hands and yet many autistic people can't bear to shake hands because that involves touching - just shows no two people on the autistic spectrum are the same!

He's 22. When he was younger he couldn't stand to be touched at all. Only daddy was allowed to snuggle and hold him when he felt sick, etc... But, after alot of one on one therapy with him, he has gone long strides with the touching! He will shake hands and very occasionally offer a hug (and allow to be hugged by people he knows) and even kiss babies! lol Yep, no two people are the same and even when they do have these types of struggles as youngster, it can be overcome with alot of consistency.

I grew up with a huggy mom (and her family). I crave physical touch (where it is appropriate). So does my non-verbal, LFA daughter (but with less reservations).

Sounds good. I gather he initiates the touching most of the time, so that it's done on his terms? What therapy did he receive? A lot of therapy out there forces a child to act as something they're not just to make them acceptable to a neurotypical world.
