We became Godparents to some kids of a woman in my RCIA class. We really should not have done it. We did not know them really well but we accepted. They too kept saying if something happened, we should take custody of the kids. I felt they misunderstood the purpose of it really. They ended up moving away and we never hear anything from them anymore. I do know, unlike the examples in the article, the Godparents are supposed to be actively practicing the Catholic faith.

Growing up the Godparents were mostly Aunts and Uncles. I am a Godfather to a niece and nephew.
