Are pets a waste of affection?

I just remember an Orthodox priest did tell me it would be a sin to kill a dog. I don't know for sure, but he may have been OCA.

okay, so that's one priest. one priest does not speak for the whole of the Church.

and it depends on context. if he meant it like killing any animal needlessly or cruelly is sin, and dog was the first thing that came to his mind, he would be correct.
