It wasn't just monks who enjoyed a 'flagon of beer'

Everyone did - water wasn't really safe to drink then - no water purification , no sewage system , no flush toilets etc etc.

Beer wasn't as strong as it is now - but it was the only thing that was really safe to drink - other than milk fresh from the cow [ literally ]
