It's kind of odd that I'm coming to the defense here, seeing as I despise MTV and most of current music. Now I'm personally not a big rap fan. I loved Public Enemy, Schooly D, and Eminem's first album and that's about it.
Some of you are being completely unfair to the original poster. The wannabe comment was taken back, but it shouldn't have been made in the first place. The OP never said he was a thug or that his rap was the "real rap". Jesus, music is music people. It may have evolved and you may view it as contaminated and fake, but you can't disrespect a fan who sees it differently than you.
And yes, rap portrays terrible messages. Rock has it's flaws too. Bands like Guns N Roses aren't exactly glorifying God either. (This coming from a huge rock fan.) So if you are going to make comments about a certain secular music type, realize that the same type of message is being portrayed in many other popular music genres besides the one you're referring to. Just like there's unacceptable rap, there's unacceptable rock, punk etc.
