I was wondering if anointing oil is something that is still used today? If so, what is it used for? What exact purpose does it serve? If still used today, is it used by some denominations more than others? What benefits come from using it? I ask these because I honestly do not know.

I know in Luke 7 that Mary Magdalene washed Jesus' feet with her tears and hair and used oil. That is why I ask these questions. While reading last night these questions came to me.

Well... I know that the Catholic church uses oil when they draw a cross on someone's forehead when they are confirmed.

But "oil" is not required, according to the Word, but belief in Jesus Christ! Faith! Repentance!

Hope that helps... kinda..

We're non-denominational and it's used in certain situations as in Scripture; e.g, Jam 5:14 "Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord."

The recipe using specific spices for the oil used in the tabernacle under Moses' administration is provided and a warning for it not to be used for other purposes. Moses used it to anoint the tabernacle and its furnishings. Also, Moses anointed Aaron and his sons to sanctify them to become the High Priest and the priest headship (Exo 29 and 30; Lev 8). Also, Samuel anointed David to become king and The Holy Spirit was with him from that point on (I Sam 16). So these things and people were not elevated but set aside and consecrated for service to Yahweh.

Yeshua was The Anointed One.

Of course, it's not about the oil itself but what it represents, The Holy Spirit.
