The stock answer for the age old question of God and evil is that freewill is the reason
that evil and pain exists, and that no more pain than is necessary in the world exists.
Of all the possible worlds that could exist, this one has the least amount of pain required to achieve free will and show God's character.

To have unnecessary pain is to deny that God created a world with the least amount of
necessary pain to produce the moral good he wants.

Animal pain goes beyond this, and seems to be unnecessary suffering with no moral virtue, no afterlife, and no redemption.

It has been shown that animals (especially when they are newborn) when are shown that they are loved, are not dominated by their killer instinct. It has been argued by WLC that animals do not feel physical pain as humans do. However, anyone who has owned a pet that they dearly loved and the pet dearly loved them, know that what WLC tries to prove is absolutely not true. We do feel each other's physical pain.

Now as to the reason for unnecessary pain in the world, this can only logically be the result of an intended attempted to undermine the original Creation project. The being assigned to head this project held the title 'Morning Star' in the Old Testament. After the Son salvaged the original intent of the Creation, it was He who was bestowed the title of. 'Morning Star' in the New Testament.
