There is also the problem of providers being used by a hospital that are out-of-network.

For Surprise Medical Bills, It’s the Beginning of the End

A Texas man, for example, received a $7,924 bill from an out-of-network oral surgeon who performed an emergency operation at an in-network hospital.

Even so, it took years to pass legislation, as well-funded interests lobbied intensely against the reforms — including millions of dollars spent on television advertising. Some private-equity-owned physician groups came to rely on surprise billing as a business model, and they generally opposed congressional reform efforts.

There are individuals and groups who act as patient advocates in response to surprise billing. They suggest you ask the hospital for an itemized bill. Sometimes patients were double billed, this can be disputed. Emergency surgery may not be charged at out of network rates. There may be controversy over what an emergency is. You might need an expert to help you. I know what hospitals in my area are in network. Hospitals may bill at higher rates for uninsured patients. Insurance companies negotiated to designate hospitals and doctors offering low rates as in network. Medical bills are a leading cause of personal bankruptcy. I thought hospitals were supposed to advertise costs, but have not found price lists on hospital web sites. One hospital merely posted the national average for various procedures.
