An Effective COVID Treatment the Media Continues to Besmirch | Real Clear Politics

On Friday, July 31, in a column ostensibly dealing with health care “misinformation,” Washington Post media critic Margaret Sullivan opened by lambasting “fringe doctors spouting dangerous falsehoods about hydroxychloroquine as a COVID-19 wonder cure.”

Actually, it was Sullivan who was spouting dangerous falsehoods about this drug, something the Washington Post and much of the rest of the media have been doing for months. On May 15, the Post offered a stark warning to any Americans who may have taken hope in a possible therapy for COVID-19. In the newspaper’s telling, there was nothing unambiguous about the science -- or the politics -- of hydroxychloroquine: “Drug promoted by Trump as coronavirus game-changer increasingly linked to deaths,” blared the headline.
...
So what is the real story on hydroxychloroquine? Here, briefly, is what we know:

One drug, hydroxychloroquine, was found to be the most effective and safe for use against the virus. Federal funds were used for clinical trials of it, but there was no guidance from Dr. Anthony Fauci or the NIH Treatment Guidelines Panel on what role the drug would play in the national pandemic response.
...
The “Fauci Strategy” was to keep early infected patients quarantined at home without treatment until they developed a shortness of breath and had to be admitted to a hospital. Then they would they be given hydroxychloroquine. The Food and Drug Administration cluelessly agreed to this doctrine and it stated in its hydroxychloroquine Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) that “hospitalized patients were likely to have a greater prospect of benefit (compared to ambulatory patients with mild illness).”

In reality just the opposite was true. This was a tragic mistake by Fauci and FDA Commissioner Dr. Stephen Hahn and it was a mistake that would cost the lives of thousands of Americans in the days to come.

At the same time, accumulating data showed remarkable results if hydroxychloroquine were given to patients early, during a seven-day window from the time of first symptom onset. If given during this window, most infections did not progress into the severe, lethal second stage of the disease.
...
Millions of people are taking or have taken hydroxychloroquine in nations that have managed to get their national pandemic under some degree of control. Two recent, large, early-use clinical trials have been conducted by the Henry Ford Health System and at Mount Sinai showing a 51% and 47% lower mortality, respectively, in hospitalized patients given hydroxychloroquine. A recent study from Spain published on July 29, two days before Margaret Sullivan’s strafing of “fringe doctors,” shows a 66% reduction in COVID mortality in patients taking hydroxychloroquine. No serious side effects were reported in these studies and no epidemic of heartbeat abnormalities.

This is ground-shaking news. Why is it not being widely reported? Why is the American media trying to run the U.S. pandemic response with its own misinformation?

And we should believe you instead of proven scientific fact because..?

Would you trust your life (or somebody else's, say a close relative) to this drug?

The article is saying that it is not proven scientific fact. The writer is credentialed in a related field. Who determines what is and is not scientific fact?

These sentences don’t go together well.
The first is an unqualified endorsement of HCQ.
The second then suggests that “the jury is still out”, noting the “clinical trials”.
Then finally we get back to “safe and effective” even though the trials had not concluded; the “experts” were waiting for the data, not pushing forward with an “HCQ for all” plan.

Propagandize better.

More polarization of medical science...

Trump said it was "a potential game changer", so his supporters cling to anyone with a "Dr." in front of their name that espouse a similar sentiment without checking their professional credentials or track record.

Trump's detractors (or at least a large number of them) are quick to support measures to prohibit doctors from using it as an experimental treatment, and are still citing a retracted study implying that it's "dangerous"

This topic has become more about "Trump Worship Syndrome" vs. "Trump Derangement Syndrome" than it has any sort of intellectual conversation about biology or virology.

...best scenario would've been for pro-Trump and anti-Trump people to just stay out of the way, and let qualified researches actually...y'know...research. Instead of droves of people deciding which side their on based solely on which side Trump's on.

One drug, hydroxychloroquine, was found to be the most effective and safe for use against the virus.

That's not true.

Federal funds were used for clinical trials of it, but there was no guidance from Dr. Anthony Fauci or the NIH Treatment Guidelines Panel on what role the drug would play in the national pandemic response.

Nor should there be until trials are completed. Anything else would be unethical.

The “Fauci Strategy” was to keep early infected patients quarantined at home without treatment until they developed a shortness of breath and had to be admitted to a hospital.

Complete and utter lie. Fauci is in charge fo public health measures and had nothing to do with a hosiptals decision to admit someone. Such an outrageous, unfounded lie against a guy that has done nothing but work for the public good his entire life. You should be ashamed of yourself for this level of false witness.

At the same time, accumulating data showed remarkable results if hydroxychloroquine were given to patients early, during a seven-day window from the time of first symptom onset.

Also not true. Hardly surprising at this stage, I guess.

Millions of people are taking or have taken hydroxychloroquine in nations that have managed to get their national pandemic under some degree of control.

More lies.

I don't understand this desire of an ignorant layman to push this dangerous murderous nonsense in the name of getting a malignant narcissist getting re-elected whilst claiming to be a Christian.

Mods, the next time you ban me (I'm guessing right now), make it permanent. The idea that at some stage I have shared oxygen with anyone as ethically barren as Nighthawkeye makes me want to vomit.

I’m not sure if that’s accurate, I’d be over the moon if it was conclusively demonstrated to be safe and effective.

I don't think the pending vaccine would be any less
'experimental' than the HCQ recipe is. Personally, if it
ever became necessary, I'd try the HCQ route first, if
it's available and is an option with my doctor. Politics
would have nothing to do with my decision.

It's funny how one of the arguments in favor of wearing masks
is that "they do it in other countries, why shouldn't we?"
Well, other countries have also been using HCQ to combat this
pandemic... why shouldn't weeeeeeee? o_O:D

Risk to benefit ratio. HCQ can kill you but may have no benefit while a mask has no risk but may prevent the transmission of the virus.

As I write this post , almost 5 millions Americans are infected , 161 thousand Americans are dead. These 161 thousand Americans are someone’s dad, some one’s daughter, some one’s grandmother.. there are cities in USA where ICU bed are overflowing.. we have seen our loved one’s dead body sitting in freezer by the road side because there is not enough grave… and there is no relief in any near future.

United States’ highest medical institute like CDC, NIH , and even President Trump’s own COVID-19 task force saying this drugs do not cure COVID-19 , it is also dangerous and deadly. Yet this member pushing for this drug as “ safe” in this forum. And for what reason ? To save lives? Off course not.. but to prove a political point.

Most of the member reading this thread will not take this drug.. but if even one member of this forum read this thread and take the drug.. that is too many. This OP don’t have any concern for human lives.. but I hope CF moderator have decency and concern about human lives.. they will not only delete this thread but stop future posting like this.

If this post ban me from the forum .. that is fine… I don’t want to be part of any “Christian” forum which promote a dangerous drugs that kill people.

This is not a ‘both sides are culpable’ thing. Trump politicized the drug for no reason other than to pretend there was a magic cure. Then his ego didn’t allow him to back down. Politics should have nothing at all to do with drug trials, and he and he alone changed that.

Perhaps the specific drug/clinical trial facet of medical science became recently politicized...

But there have been other aspects of medical science (and medicine in general) that have been politicized for a while in several other facets over the over-arching umbrella of "medical science"

- Healthcare (with regards to coverage in general)
- Nutrition science (it's not a coincidence that vegans/vegetarians are more 3x more likely to be democrats, and why "the carnivore diet" is growing in popularity among the far right)
- The science behind certain types of drug use is heavily politicized, with people on the far right clutching to the specific studies that show that marijuana use is harmful (and ignoring many of the other ones), and people on the far left happily embracing some very low level observational studies and anecdotal evidence suggesting that it's seemingly good for everything.
- Mental health topics surrounding biology and gender dysphoria

Then you have other topics that tend to be hotly debated, but don't have a clear political line drawn, like alternative medicine, vaccines, GMO's etc...but can still be prone to politicization simply due to followers of them seemingly ignoring the science when it comes to their pet projects, but then chastising others for "not following the science" on other subjects.

For instance, RFK Jr has never been shy about chastising climate change deniers for failing to adhere to the scientific consensus, meanwhile traveling the country doing speaking tours on behalf of the anti-vaxx movement. (and he was a front runner for an Obama appointment to be EPA administrator)

Neither party, as a whole, really passes a "purity" test when it comes to the topic of medical science.

I’m not sure if that’s accurate, I’d be over the moon if it was conclusively demonstrated to be safe and effective.

Personally, I don't think it's all that effective (if at all)...it's a drug that was intended for something else, and was just something they wanted to try (it's not the first time that doctors went off-label). However, the fact that many doctors wanted clinical trials done shows that there was at least an "inkling" that it was something they thought was at least worth a shot...and then Trump jumped the gun by using phrases like "Game Changer" and bragging about how he, himself, was taking it.

However, I do feel that the attempts to target the safety aspect weren't well founded either, thus the reason why the Lancet retracted the study...and the New England Journal of Medicine had to retract a similar study (from the same research group not a day later) over similar concerns about a study they produced looking into off-label use of blood pressure medications for it.

And of course the subtext is that Democrats are intentionally suppressing an effective cure for Covid-19 so that more people will die and Trump won't be re-elected. Republicans don't care if that is actually true or not, so long as it is believed.
