What is wrong with American politics?

Congress always seems to be in gridlock.

The president is always public enemy number one even though the people elected the president.

No matter whether democrats or republicans are elected the status quo is maintained.

Viewed from the outside American politics seems corrupt and dysfunctional.

I agree with @yeshuaslavejeff, but would also say that the two party system that we have has polarized people to think of either-or. A system that had at least three viable parties, each with some standing, would at least have to discuss the issues, rather than hope that their own party would pick up enough seats to dictate terms in the next election. We also seem to base our loyalty on the party instead of on any particular issue.

The majority of the representatives in Congress of one of the political parties will not accept the results of the last presidential election.

The result is that much of the energy that could have gone into passing legislation that the American people need and want is wasted on rehashing past history.

Donald Trump was elected by the Electoral College.

Hillary Clinton won the popular vote.

This isn't the first time this has happened in my lifetime.

When 'I'm right and you're wrong' attitude prevails, why need a third party? LOL

Money and power.

Too much money and power have been accumulated in DC. So people fight for it. Why would you change the status quo if it paid your salary?

After the election,
I think many people pointed out, including in the nationwide televised news,
that
people's votes did not matter - the outcome was decided before the election even started.

This appears to be true most if not all of the time.

And according to our system of government, according to our Constitution, which of those determines the winner of the election?

That's right. Its the Electoral College vote.

There's more money and more power in and controlled by pharmakeia.

Also stock portfolio owned by the USA is mostly or largely in pharmacy, thus depending on that to do well to pay everyone's salaries and bills for the country. Not a good partnership or dependency I think.

With 350,000,000 Americans, it's a safe bet that nobody's interests are ever perfectly met. Only God can do that.

I don't think that Trump was a pre-determined outcome, though, given the amount of hate that exists in DC for him.

This appears to be non-sequitur. What does anyone's interests have to do with the previous posts leading up to this ? The politic system is set up to control and to profit from people and not to help them, right ?

Also, it is not God's job nor purpose to meet anyone's political or social or other interests in this world/ system, is it ?

"Pre-determined outcome" was a certainty, not a guess. Even if not pre-determined by the powers behind the scenes financially,

returning to what the Bible says - God is the One Who we are to trust and obey and rely on, and it is He Who sets up nations and leaders as He Pleases.

It wasn't originally, in this country anyway. Not at all.

Also, it is not God's job nor purpose to meet anyone's political or social or other interests in this world/ system, is it ?
No, we're made for God's glory. However, only God can meet our needs perfectly. That was the point.

I still don't think that Trump's nomination was pre-determined by men.

returning to what the Bible says - God is the One Who we are to trust and obey and rely on, and it is He Who sets up nations and leaders as He Pleases.
And as Paul teaches, God ordains governments. Sometimes, apparently as punishment and sometimes as a benefit.

This is one of the important points. If the elected political party cannot enact legislation because the congress is always locked. Due to the opposition party ignoring the election result, then there is a deep problem in the American political system.

Why bother having elections if the elected party cannot govern?

How many times has the government shutdown?
The result is that much of the energy that could have gone into passing legislation that the American people need and want is wasted on rehashing past history.
No one cares what the voters want, you don't hear many democrats mentioning the voters ever. It's all about a possible impeachment of Trump, Russia and Trump, years of Trump and Russia is all that dominates your political news.

Is there anyone in public office that has not resigned due to the dysfunction and instability in the political realm?

There's a wider culture war going on. Politics is a battle within the war, and war is ugly.

That's true as well. Politicians merely pander to those social trends. Christians are losing the culture war, as well. Unfortunately.

I tend to think that our Founding Fathers envisioned gridlock as a good thing. Checks and balances keep us more stable and less prone to drastic whims and massive changes in policy.

How many times has the government shutdown?
A lot, and it's used simply for political purposes. Nobody should be concerned by a government shutdown except the government. It's what they bring upon themselves for not passing an annual budget.

Most older cultures around the world are deeply corrupt and deeply divided, just look at Italy; fifty governments in as many years.

Is America catching up to these older cultures where the corruption is historical and unbreakable.

My question is why bother having elections when the result is mayhem?

You don't think that American politics is becoming more and more divided?

These political parties do not seem interested in serving the public, it seems to be more of a relentless desire for power.
