Muslims Collect Money to Rebuild Burned Churches

Keith Roshangar
Religion News Service

A group of American Muslims is using compassion to counter the violent reactions of fellow Muslims who were angered by Pope Benedict XVI's controversial remarks about Islam.

The Florida office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations said Thursday (Sept. 21) that it will deliver $5,000 in seed money to help repair six churches in the Palestinian Territories that were damaged by Muslims who were infuriated by the pope's speech.

"We're still waiting for a detailed report from the Catholic Near East Welfare Association to find out the full cost of the damage," said CAIR-Tampa Executive Director Ahmed Bedier, announcing the campaign with Catholic officials in St. Petersburg, Fla. "But the response has been received well."

somehow $5,000 doesn't make up for a nun and her bodyguards killed in cold blood.

Good grief! So much for that verse thats sais in all things give thanks. You cant even acknowledge that an attempt to help is being given here?? Why try to take this thread off topic by mentioning the Nun? I am truly sorry for what happened and I posted my views in teh thread about her BUT the Nun has nothing to do with this link/OP.

heres a quote from the link (incase anyone missed what its about)

Raham - thanks for posting this. Shows that kindness is not a patent of a particular religion and that people can still be be kind and generous despitetheir religious boundaries. Some of us do see that.

$5000 is not enough
I am sure the Muslim community could afford more than that
I guess the idea is not too popular in the community

Well seeing as how these Florida Muslims didn't actually have anything to do with the burning, I'd say the burden is not on THEM to pay a single cent, so any bit they are willing to offer should be accepted graciously and with thanks....

Absolutely right.

Conservatives on this board frequently say that we are not to pay for the sins of another (when dealing with racial issues mostly). Is this any different?

Most Christian Americans had nothing to do with the tsunami's that hit Southeast Asia
They were able to gather up more than $5000

This is a wonderful thing. Thanks for posting this. The horrible things always overtake the newsmedia. But the good always overtake the bad...even if not in the news. Sadly... the good isn't very newsworthy to the majority of the media.

Seriously, what utterly filthy, shameless slander. :sigh:

IIRC, the article said they'd initially raised $5000 but were expecting much more as the campaign received publicity from different Islamic groups.

Nonetheless -- considering the Muslim population of the countries hit by the tsunami, I am thinking that a great deal of Western money raised probably came from Muslims -- certainly one proportionate to Christian/Muslim populations.

But really, that's irrelevant. :) Just taking a play out of your own playbook.

Edit -- re-read the article; looks like they're going to also wait for a report on the total cost of the damage to the Churches which seems to imply they're willing to raise more, but nonetheless even if they don't raise more that does nothing to subtract from this.
