Allen Weisselberg, former President Donald Trump’s long-time chief financial officer, was sentenced by a New York judge to five months in jail for his role in a decade-long tax fraud scheme after testifying as the state’s witness against the Trump Organization.

Following the court hearing, Weisselberg, 75, is expected to report to Rikers Island, the notorious New York City jail, to begin serving his sentence immediately. He will be placed in an infirmary unit and not be part of the general population, a person familiar with the matter told CNN.

He pleaded guilty last August to 15 felonies in a deal with prosecutors. As part of the deal, he was required to testify truthfully at the trial of the Trump Organization, pay $2 million in back taxes, interest and penalties, and waive any right to appeal.

Weisselberg admitted he should have paid taxes on off-the-books compensation, totaling roughly $200,000 in one year, which included a luxury Manhattan apartment overlooking the Hudson River, two Mercedes Benz car leases, parking, utilities, furniture and private school tuition for his grandchildren.

That is the same amount of time that Martha Stewart was sentenced for insider trading. Leona Helmsley, the Queen of Mean, was sentenced to 21 months for tax evasion.

Eleven Trump Associates were indicted after criminal investigations. One of the most notorious groups since the Watergate burglary during the Nixon administration of the 1970’s.
11 Trump associates have now been charged with crimes. 11! | CNN Politics
As someone who's not a Trump fan, obviously I'm not trying to defend Trump here...

But, it does make me wonder how many organizations (ran by ultra-wealthy powerful people) would have the same fate if people were given a reason to look into it.

In other words, how many other orgs have the same kinds of things going on, but are "flying under the radar" because they haven't ruffled any political feathers.

I read the new Republican House majority wants to defund the Internal Revenue Service (tax collection).
House Republicans vote to strip IRS funding, following pledge to repeal nearly $80 billion approved by Congress

Merely to be against the Democrats or Republicans is not good enough. So much deficit spending was done during the Trump and Biden administrations, now we have inflation. The pandemic caused supply chain disruption inflation. The war between Russia and Ukraine added more inflation as Ukraine is an exporter of grain. Sanctions brought more price increases.

A recession is the right time for deficit spending to counter the effects. Trump continued that during his mini boom when the proper thing to do would have been to pay down the debt.

That said, inflation is worldwide and directly related to the pandemic.

The entire Congress and Executive Branch were unanimous in their support of the bailout of corporations and workers, if I remember correctly. If you were retired or unemployed, they did not give you a free paycheck, because you did not work before the pandemic hit. Luxury hotels, cruise ships, , casinos, Vegas shows, movie theaters, restaurants, coffee shops, etc. got government support.

And neither will I.

There is no doubt much more of this around. Some of it may even be as large in scope (or larger). From the evidence presented in various cases that relate to *other* things Trump Org has done, this is also just the tip of the iceberg. They may or may not get punished for their other malfeasance. (The NY AG if maximally successful will effectively end Trump Org as a NY business and take large fines.)

Real estate seems rife with such things, but we are all aware of various grifts, graft, and skims in a wide variety of businesses, charities, and churches.
In other words, how many other orgs have the same kinds of things going on, but are "flying under the radar" because they haven't ruffled any political feathers.
As they say, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. As is the case with many "decades-long crimes" investigations only truly begin in earnest when something blatant and obvious is done or the right people notice.

Pro-tip: If you are engaged in a covert criminal operation of any kind (tax evasion, drug distribution, prostitution, etc.) don't run for office, especially high office. Just the additional attention of reporters trying to learn more about you may blow it all up.

Is this the place for a discussion about inflation? There must be a thread for it.

Meanwhile, back on topic: eleven Trump 'associates'; does that mean employees of his corporation? Or does it have the sense of being members of the same criminal gang?

Either way, it not a good look for Trump.
