All the words in the book of James are applicable for Christians today.

Some have the wrong idea that James was only writing to Jewish Christians who were under the Mosaic Law, and that all of his words were never intended for Gentile believers.

I believe this is a desperate attempt to deny the most obvious words in Scripture by those who believe in an extreme for of "Eternal Security," and or a "Sin and Still Be Saved Type Belief."

Why is it wrong by some to think that certain words by James do not apply to us? Because we can see in other places in Scripture after the cross that teach that we need to obey as a part of life (or salvation) after we are saved by God's grace.
  1. Paul says, a person can deny God by a lack of works (Titus 1:16).
  2. Paul says we have to continue in His goodness, otherwise we can be cut off [just like the Jews were cut off] (Romans 11:21-22).
  3. The apostle John says, whoever does not righteousness or does not love his brother is not of God (1 John 3:10).
  4. Paul says if you live after the flesh, you will die, but if you put to death the misdeeds of the body by the Spirit, you will live (Romans 8:13).
  5. Paul lists certain sins for the Galatians (like murder, adultery, idolatry, etc.) and says that they which do such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God (Galatians 5:19-21).
  6. Peter says, if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear? Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing (1 Peter 4:18-19).
  7. The apostle John writes in the last book of the Bible, "Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie." (Revelation 22:14-15).

One reason that some reject James is because Paul in Galatians refers to the Judaizers who came from James. In Acts we see James urging Paul to keep the law and make a sacrifice which would have been a terrible insult to the sacrifice Jesus made.

Without any dispute from me James was wrong. But there is no evidence of this error in his letter. On the contrary there are numerous examples in his letter of him "confessing his sins". Peter denied the Lord, we don't see that as a basis to reject his ministry. On the contrary the Lord told him when he returns to strengthen his brethren. He learns to comfort others with the comfort that he himself has received. Paul sinned when he was Saul of Tarsus and even says he was less than the least of all the saints, so again, not a basis to reject his ministry but rather the foundation from which he saw that body of Christ.
