Inundated Houston hospitals issue grim advisory to ambulances: Go elsewhere

Houston hospitals have been forced to treat hundreds of COVID-19 patients in their emergency rooms — sometimes for several hours or multiple days — as they scramble to open additional intensive care beds for the wave of seriously ill people streaming through their doors, according to internal numbers shared with NBC News and ProPublica.

At the same time, the region’s 12 busiest hospitals are increasingly telling emergency responders that they cannot safely accept new patients, at a rate nearly three times that of a year ago, according to data reviewed by reporters.

The increase in ambulance diversions, coupled with the spike in patients being held indefinitely in emergency rooms, are the latest indicators that Houston hospitals are straining to keep up with a surge of new coronavirus patients. ProPublica and NBC News have previously reported that a public hospital in Houston ran out of a medication to treat COVID-19 patients and that a spike in at-home deaths from cardiac arrest suggests that the death toll from the coronavirus may be higher than official statistics show.

It seems in America, nothing was learned from New York.

:sigh:

Everything is bigger in Texas?
San Antonio hospitals and Dallas/Fort Worth are having issues too.

And in Arizona:
Arizona leads U.S. in growth of new COVID-19 cases | AZ Big Media

Confirmed COVID-19 cases in Arizona surpassed 116,000 on Friday, July 10, and the number of deaths attributed to COVID-19 reached 2,082 after an increase of 44 from the previous day. Confirmed COVID-19 cases in Arizona now stand at 116,892, increasing 4,221 from the previous day, according to the Arizona Department of Health Services.

Of the total number of COVID-19 cases in Arizona since the start of the pandemic in January, 25,034 cases — or about 25 percent — have come in the last seven days. Here is a look at Arizona’s seven-day increase in cases:

July 4: 2,695 new cases

July 5: 3,536 new cases

July 6: 3,352 new cases

July 7: 3,653 new cases

July 8: 3,520 new cases

July 9: 4,057 new cases

July 10: 4,221 new cases

......
Arizona doctors and health care workers have raised the alarm about the need for more staffing, testing and personal protective gear across the state in recent weeks. Masks and social distancing are a must, according to Dr. Shad Marvasti and other experts.

“You need to really do both in order to mitigate, and ultimately, hopefully suppress the spread of COVID-19,” said Marvasti, the director of public health, prevention and health promotion at the University of Arizona College of Medicine Phoenix.

Denial, lack of preparation, denial, lack of supplies, denial, lack of leadership. denial. All in the richest most powerful country in the world. Denial.

The U.S. has long been a hotbed of science denialism. They've reaped what they've sown.

We live in a personal bubble. Jesus Christ of Nazareth does not want us to just spend time in our prayer closet, He wants us to engage with those who are poor, sick and in prison. Shutting out the reality of this virus will only hurt those who are in the forefront of it. A little too late for Texas and many other states. But you can start now by following protocols. Be blessed and stay healthy.

Beds, or ICU beds for those particularly sick and requiring much more care?
Your link prevents one from scrolling down.
I did not read it but clicked on it to see if I could see what you see about it not scolling down and from what I could see I could scroll on the way down.

Patients waiting for beds in Houston hospitals are actually waiting for enough staff to treat them

"So, when we think about beds, it's not just the number that we have every day," McKeon said. "You need to separate out the physical bed from the bed, the technology and the staff to really manage that bed. We've got physical capacity, but nursing and staffing will always be a constant challenge, particularly at a time when we're seeing these numbers fly way off the charts. Now, we're in the top two or three states looking at this massive surge."

No good having a bed if no one can take care of you. Nurses, respiratory therapists and more are required to care for Covid patients. Just having a bed in any unit does not work.
