Simple, because without the chicken coming first, there would be no parent to teach the egg how to protect itself from predators, and the babies/eggs could never survive on their own.
The babies wouldn't know how to find food, and hunt for themselves, and if by some astrological miracle didn't get eaten by a predator, then hunger would kill them.
