Take a walking stick, don't be in a hurry and bring food and water with you, but leave nothing non-organic behind when you exit the place. If you are going alone, be SURE to let at least 2 people who are not going with you know where you plan to go and do not veer off that course. Should you get lost, they can notify the authorities.

Water is the biggest thing. Dehydration is a major concern. People can live without food for many days but not water ... A slingshot might protect you from a mean squirrel but not a bear or Mt lion.

New Zealand, eh? You're on your own, mate... Being a simple Yank, I don't wander off track without a good knife, water, a big gun, and a pack with essential supplies such as fire starter, first aid kit, hatchet, flashlight(torch), snacks, para cord, and extra clothing.

But we have wolves, mountain lions, and grizzly bears where I hike. I suspect the weather and terrain are the biggest dangers to you blokes out there.
