    My family began our Advent tradition just last year. We all, especially the children, loved the symbolism of the Advent wreath. The kids love to make things anyway, and picking out the various parts of the wreath and learning what they stood for was really alot of fun. I found a good article explaining the history and function of the Advent wreath and thought I would share it for any of our non-Catholic friends who may not be familiar with it. As it isn't 'exclusively' Catholic, some of you might like to incorporate it, or a variation of it, into your family Christmas tradition. :)

    God bless...

    Mmm....could be used for churches too!

    In my church we choose families to light the advent candles each week, and then for the 2 Christmas Eve services. They have some Bible verse to read, and then a little tidbit, generally on the candle's meaning, and then the candle is lit. It would be nice to have something a little different this year. :)

    on my Advent thread. LadyJane, who is probably the kindest person I've ever had the pleasure to meet. I've never seen her lose it with anyone.

    ANYWAY... She suggested doing daily Scripture readings and reflections for the boards through Advent. If you guys think it's a good idea I could post them here, too. :)

    God bless...

    Hey, Sandy, why don't you post also at Catholic Truth? We need to keep that site alive, and I have been trying to come up with something.

    Regards LadyJane, she is a blessing to the boards. I've had a few e-mails with her.

    Have a good Advent
    Ken :)

    I think it's a wonderful idea to share daily stuff throughout Advent. :) If I get my church's Advent devotional in time, and I like how it's presented...I was going to do the same thing in the Fellowship Court...but there's no need to restrict ourselves to only 1 sharing of Advent readings! :)

    I look forward to your postings!

    Besides this you know what hour it is, how it is full time now for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed;
    12
    the night is far gone, the day is at hand. Let us then cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light;
    13
    let us conduct ourselves becomingly as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy.
    14
    But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

    God bless you on this day.

    2nd Day of Advent

    1 Corinthians 1:
    3
    Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
    4
    I give thanks to God always for you because of the grace of God which was given you in Christ Jesus,
    5
    that in every way you were enriched in him with all speech and all knowledge--
    6
    even as the testimony to Christ was confirmed among you--
    7
    so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ;
    8
    who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
    9
    God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

    God bless you on this day.

    Mark 13:
    33
    Take heed, watch; for you do not know when the time will come.
    34
    It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to be on the watch.
    35
    Watch therefore--for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or in the morning--
    36
    lest he come suddenly and find you asleep.
    37
    And what I say to you I say to all: Watch."

    God bless you on this day.

    The sun shall be no more your light by day, nor for brightness shall the moon give light to you by night; but the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory.
    20
    Your sun shall no more go down, nor your moon withdraw itself; for the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your days of mourning shall be ended.
    21
    Your people shall all be righteous; they shall possess the land for ever, the shoot of my planting, the work of my hands, that I might be glorified.

    For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope.
    5
    May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus,
    6
    that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
    7
    Welcome one another, therefore, as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.
    8
    For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God's truthfulness, in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs,
    9
    and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written, "Therefore I will praise thee among the Gentiles, and sing to thy name";
    10
    and again it is said, "Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people";
    11
    and again, "Praise the Lord, all Gentiles, and let all the peoples praise him";
    12
    and further Isaiah says, "The root of Jesse shall come, he who rises to rule the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles hope."
    13
    May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.
    God bless you on this day.

    Psalm 43
    3
    Oh send out thy light and thy truth; let them lead me, let them bring me to thy holy hill and to thy dwelling!
    4
    Then I will go to the altar of God, to God my exceeding joy; and I will praise thee with the lyre, O God, my God.
    5
    Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my help and my God.

    A Psalm of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
    2
    When evildoers assail me, uttering slanders against me, my adversaries and foes, they shall stumble and fall.
    3
    Though a host encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war arise against me, yet I will be confident.
    4
    One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in his temple.

    Ephesians 5
    6
    Let no one deceive you with empty words, for it is because of these things that the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.
    7
    Therefore do not associate with them,
    8
    for once you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as children of light
    9
    (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true),
    10
    and try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.
    11
    Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.
    12
    For it is a shame even to speak of the things that they do in secret;
    13
    but when anything is exposed by the light it becomes visible, for anything that becomes visible is light.
    14
    Therefore it is said, "Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give you light."

    God bless you on this day.
