Activist Chicago Priest Conducts Same-Sex “Blessing Ceremony” in Direct Violation of Vatican Document

This is the second such episode (that we know of) in Cardinal Cupich’s Archdiocese of Chicago following the highly publicized incident conducted at St. Vincent de Paul Parish earlier this year.

This past Sunday, the notorious Rev. Michael Pfleger, pastor of St. Sabina Parish in Chicago, officiating a public same-sex couple blessing ceremony in direct violation of Fiducia Supplicans.

The Chicago Sun Times reports that an intimate blessing ceremony between Michael Thiry and Nate Washington was held at the couple’s apartment building and included about a dozen of loved ones who enjoyed barbecue ribs, blueberry coconut margaritas and other tropical-themed food and drink.

NO. God does not bless your ongoingly committing the sin that cries out to heaven, as Christ commanded the woman, "Go, and sin no more."

You cannot bless sin.

This MOCKS the cross.

Who mocks the cross?

Put on your thinking caps.

Gee, who could it be?

Satan tries to degrade all things holy mocking them. That's why he encourages things like the "Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence", the "Black Mass", and now, this parody of marriage.

It's grotesque and disgusting, but a sign of the times. We must all get ready and stay ready, because hard times be a-comin'. :(

How did he NOT KNOW this was wrong?

Me neither. Nor that it happened in the archdiocese of Chicago.
He’s probably one of those progressive priests that screams love is love.

Lust isn’t love and LGBT isn’t love.

Period.

Not sure what your point is, I'm not defending the priest merely pointing out that
he's been at odds with his own bishop.

I know you are not defending him. I am just a bit surprised that he somehow thought he could get away with it. Maybe he misread what cardinal Cupich would allow him to get away with.

Spiritual blessings come from God ... what the pope does (or anyone for that matter) doesn't matter .... it's up to God and we are not privy to His blessings. Anyone can ask for a blessing.

The blessing Pope Francis has approved for same-sex couples is a pastoral gesture that is meant to show closeness to God and the Church, and to encourage a journey of faith. The blessing is not intended to approve the union, nor is it meant to be similar to a marriage ceremony.

The blessing is outlined in the Vatican's Fiducia Supplicans (Supplicating Trust) document, which was approved by Pope Francis in December 2023. The document states that the blessing should:

  • Be private and held with a priest

  • Not be tied to a Catholic celebration or religious service

  • Not be given at the same time as a civil union ceremony

  • Not use set rituals or wedding clothing and gestures

  • Not be given in a liturgical context

  • Not be used to legitimize anything
The document also states that the church should not deny requests for blessings for same-sex couples. It says that people seeking a blessing should not be held to an impossible moral standard.

Pope Francis has said that the decision to allow same-sex blessings is not about official doctrinal changes. He has also said that the church's traditional doctrine on marriage remains firm.

Controversial for sure.

Controversial indeed. Because blessing a ‘couple’ blesses them in their coupleness and does legitimize what makes them a couple. They could bless individuals and nobody would protest that. But as it is almost all African bishops and numerous bishops around the world object to blessing couples in unblessable circumstances. And it IS a liturgical thing even though they try to pretend it isn’t. Which is why the Orthodox and Eastern Rite Catholics object. Fiducia supplicans will have to be withdrawn for correction some day soon.

Yes, but some would say the hard times are already here. God Bless You :)
We must persevere. It will only get worse.

Trust in God and be faithful.

Be blessed.
