In my childhood it was like this:

Men still wore hats outside - but in churches they put them down.
Women, however, always displayed their fashionable hats on Sunday.

How was it in your time?
I always thought of Minnie Pearl when we visited certain churches.

Women, however, always displayed their fashionable hats on Sunday.

Growing up, it was said to be shameful for women to have their heads uncovered in church. A hat or prayer clothe was a demand/requirement, not something they wanted to do(similar to the women covering their whole head/faces in other religions). As time went on, woman start making due and began a challenge to see who could wear the biggest, fanciest and most expensive hats. It evolved from a device to cover shame, to a fashion symbol.

And I find no fault in it.

Growing up, it was normal to expect women and girls to wear fashionable Hats and stylish hair covering cloth, right now i hardly see anyone wearing Hats but still see those hair covering clothes on some, i still wear them in Church.

Only been Catholic since 2017, men are the same but most women don't wear head coverings anymore unless I go to a Latin Mass. There are a few women at my home parish who wear veils during a ordinary form Mass though.

We have several that wear head coverings but the majority doesn’t. I remember veiling was a big topic of discussion here in OBOB a few years ago.

I feel like I have an extra measure of respect for the women who decide to veil at a novus ordo, just because it's so unexpected and can actually earn a little bit of ire from the Susans.

So head coverings are combined with Latin?

Since the Latin Mass is the traditional Mass, the practices surrounding it tend to be more in line with the historic traditions of the Church. Including head coverings.

Definitely novus ordo. I was surprised as well. Yes, I know Susans. Lots of eye rolling and gossip.

It sticks in their craw so bad!

Good heavens Shirley! She's not wearing shorts AND she's veiling! She's so rigid I almost mistook her for an oak plank!
