"The Roman Catholic Church is almost certainly the wealthiest organization in the world. In the United States alone, it is estimated that the Catholic Church has an operating budget of $170 billion. By comparison, in fiscal year 2012, Apple and General Motors each had about $150 billion in revenue worldwide. No one outside the Vatican knows for sure how much money the church has, because—unlike every other category of tax-exempt “nonprofit” organizations—religious organizations in the United States are not required to submit basic financial reporting to the IRS. From Vatican City (the Catholic Church’s own country) to St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan, the Church owns some of the most extraordinary art and architecture the world has ever known. It operates a vast and lucrative network of schools, universities, and hospitals whose Medicare and Medicaid patients are bankrolled by American taxpayers, yet it is listed as a nonprofit organization."

Deflection.

Deflection, yes, but it would be good to repeal the filing exemption for churches under section. 501(3)(c) of the internal revenue code. (This would not remove the tax exemption only require them to file the same public tax returns non-church non-profits file.)

You learn to walk before you can run. What were the stats for the Catholic Church? I don't believe anyone knows the true stats except church leaders and even they don't know how much individuals have donated to the many charities in the world. Only God knows.

How does what the Catholic church, or any other church, does negate what yours does?

I am not negating anything. The Catholic Church does a tremendous amount of good and all churches should do good. Just last week our church gave one million dollars to the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army does a tremendous amount of good also. That being said there are churches that are not all that charitable. God will judge.

"Yesterday, a “whistleblower” who used to help manage the church’s investment portfolio released a series of documents alleging that the [LDS] church has mismanaged more than $100 billion of charitable donations, including by channeling a portion of that money into for-profit investments on which it has failed to pay taxes — The Washington Post and Religion Unplugged have more details." How persuasive is whistleblower's claim the LDS church is hiding wealth from the IRS?

Those articles are old and unfounded. The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has spent billions on welfare projects, doesn't that count as charity?

So, 2o19 is old? So if something was done a long time ago that means it's OK? Yesterday is the past, does that mean it doesn't matter what happened yesterday?

How much does it cost to build a temple? How much is each temple worth?
Where can the public view the tax forms for the LDS Church?

What was the topic of this thread again?

  • The Church supports and maintains more than 30,000 congregations with thousands of chapels and meetinghouses across the globe. It operates temples, family history centers, institutes and seminaries, storehouses, employment centers, and universities and other higher education initiatives, as well as oversees the proselytizing and service work of 70,000 missionaries worldwide."
