Hi guys, im a 16 yr old christian male and i've just joined these forums a couple days ago. So anyways there is this game I started playing last november and it's called the Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. Now this is probably going to be a long post but i'm not going to go into details about what this game is about you can probably find out about it on google or on wikipedia , but if you heard of it then that's good.

So basically this game is an RPG (stands for role playing game) which means it's basically what you make it out to be. It's not like Call of Duty where you play as a soldier or do missions or Mario where you play as the plumber. You have as much freedom to do whatever you want in this game, whether it's good or bad and yes you can play as a christian.

A couple months ago I was playing this game any where from 5-8hrs a day then God convicted me of playing it. But the reasons I don't think were because I was playing the game, but it was because I was making wrong choices in the game like joining the Dark Brotherhood (which is an assassin's guild) and the Theives Guild. This game also has magic and occult symbolism (potions, symbols, birthsigns, starsigns, classes etc.). Also in Skyrim I pratically wiped out 95% of the Whiterun residents. But now I think I have more control over what I was seeing on there.

This time i'm going to play as the good christian guy and not use magic or violence on anyone. I also am reinstalling this game on my PC so that means I can use mods to change the way the game is played. Mods are short for modifications so that means I can change the game to whatever I want it to be.

I was thinking of playing as an Imperial male and i'm going to make it so that I can role play as an Imperial City guard captain and im going to build a house within the IC walls ( not the IC waterfront shack house). I am also thinking of making a mod that will put the entire Bible into the game (although i'm probably going to have to divide it into a couple hundread different books since I can't put the whole 1500+ pgs into one book in the game). Also, I might make some quests like Destroy the Mages Guild or Destroy the Dark Brother Hood etc. I also am probably going to make it illegal to for people to worship the Nine Divines or any Daedra.

I also might go out of the imperial city and go to Leyawiin and crack down on some khajiit skooma smuglers and arrest them and then throw them in the locker or turn them into the local authorities. And it will be like "Stop right there criminal scum!!! You've violated the law, pay the court a fine or serve your sentence. Your stolen goods are now forfeit!" lol

Usually I only play this game because I like exploring around all of Cyrodiil and visiting the towns like Cheydinhal, Skingrad, Anvil etc. I also like to collect items and save up gold to buy a nice house in the game to put all of my stuff. I don't agree with the magic, occult, birthsigns, pagan god worship in the game but since I play on the PC i'm going to try to find a way to remove that stuff from the game with mods.

I think it will be ok if I play the game and not do bad things but do good things because I found in Philippians 4:8 it says Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on those things.

So I think it's ok if I play it but only do praiseworthy things that glorify God and do it in moderation. I'm probably going to play like less than 1 hr a day or less than 10-15hrs a month or something like that. Of course I am going to spend more time with God. I prayed to God last night whether it was bad and so far I don't think that i'm convicted not to play it at all just not to do bad things or use magic.

What do you guys think ( Good Idea, go ahead; Bad idea it's defenetely a sin; or I wouldn't reccomend it, but it should be ok (not a sin)) or anything else you have to say.

Thanks, God Bless!

EDIT: I'm sorry I think i've decided i'm not going to play afterall.

I had a similar experience with a game I played once. I was curious as to what it would be like if you were as bad as you can be in the game. Not to far into the game, I just couldn't go through with it because I don't like playing as some cruel person.

Anyway, it looks like what you are doing with stopping is a good strategy. I might also suggest a fast. I sometimes do it when I get over competitive and take a game to seriously.

Thanks for the replies guys, I really appriciate them. Anyways @Barricade24 thanks for the advice I agree, @FacelessOne yeah I do have Skyrim and have played it on the PS3 and I have Oblivion for the Ps3, just not PC anymore. @Dreamer8 well yeah for most people it's easy to do everything, I haven't done everything, but I usually play because I like to roleplay as different characters and create my own storylines and quests. Sorry but I have another question. What do you guys think of lower esrb rated games like Final Fantasy 7 which is rated T but has some questionable content in it as well but is not quite engrossing or violent as Skyrim or Oblivion?

Final Fantasy 7 has more addictive power, but I think it's fine.

How is it more addictive? Of course the main story is like 4 or 5 times longer than Skyrim's but it is more linear and has fewer side quests.

Maybe it's just me, but I found Skyrim easier to hit save & quit then I did Final Fantasy 7. It might have something to do with the fact that I played Final Fantasy 7 at a time in my life when I wasn't very busy..

How would it be a sin to play a fictional video game that has no basis in reality?

Jesus said, in His sermon on the mount, that it's a sin to even think about certain things.

To even think about it? So even a passing thought that you didn't take further about such thing is a sin?

Precisely. I believe his overall premise was to highlight the fact that our very nature is corrupted, and no amount of "being a good person" will do us any good unless we accept his death as our personal ransom for our sins.

Certainly interesting and a good challenge but overall killing makes the game more fun. I mean what's like slaying the Dark Brotherhood compared to trying to reason with them?

I'm not sure if you were talking about me or about the video that Dreamer8 posted but I was thinking of something more along the lines of converting/recruiting them or sending them to the Imperial City to go on a fair trial.
