Silhouettes
Much can make a silhouette,
Even short and simple things.
I have some I?ll not forget.

Words in sand may sometimes whet,
Birds of time may sometimes sing,
But I?ve some I?ll not forget.

Leaves will fall without a threat,
Trampled on, and dead - no wings!
But I?ve some I?ll not forget.

Words in stone may one well etch,
But a touched heart ever rings;
Much can make a silhouette,
I have some I?ll not forget.

Withered Tree
The withered tree was once alive and well,
Its head held high; it swayed in gusts of pride.
?Twas growing, green and gold ?til ill befell,
?Twas standing tall and crowned in green beside.
In but the time of one day wrought with fate,
Its pride and crown would be felled to the ground.
A boy that bore a knife was death that date,
He thought naught of it when death he wound.
?Twas dying; browns instead of greens now show.
Its leaves that fell can never be replaced ?
The cause was not a storm nor axe?s blow,
But one thin line about the strong tree?s waist.
Such fragile beauty, like a pressed, dried rose:
From book it fell and broke upon the ground.
