A horrifying event, but why is the attorney bringing up alcohol?

I have seen a trend with these, not too long ago a man set a woman on fire, and claimed he was drinking, and that he has a drinking problem.

What does this have anything to do with these murders?

You wrote "murders", plural. There are no murders in the linked MSN article and you mention, with no reference by which to confirm its authenticity a case which you only imply resulted in the woman's death. So I'm left puzzled as to what you mean by "these" and quite unconvinced (since you have provided no evidence) that there is a trend.

As to why a defendant, or a defendant's lawyer would mention drinking, this can in some jurisdictions and for some crimes be considered a mitigating factor.

i have addiction issues myself but even if you're drinking, and you kill someone it can understand unclear thinking but doesn't excuse the fact you are the one that took that life, and you have to take responsibly of that
