A Florida cop pushed a teenager off a roof. His punishment: Forfeiting one vacation day.
Yadiel Torres perched nervously on the edge of the roof of his friend’s house as police surrounded him in March. It was roughly a nine-foot drop to the manicured green lawn below, and from his vantage point, he could look into the backyards of neighboring homes in the Orlando suburb of Kissimmee, Fla. One officer had clambered up the roof after him, while two others waited on the ground, their hands on their stun guns. The lanky 18-year-old dangled one leg, looking as though he was contemplating his options.

“Push him off the roof,” Kissimmee Police Sgt. Anthony Amada called from the yard. “Push him off. Just push him off.”
But for the two officers involved, the consequences have been minimal. According to the Orlando Sentinel, Massiah was given an eight-hour suspension, which he fulfilled by giving up a vacation day. Amada, who the investigators recommended be fired, had handed in his notice in June. At the time of his resignation, the 14-year veteran was facing another, unrelated complaint alleging excessive use of force, and had recently been suspended for another incident in which he was deemed to have acted carelessly during a police pursuit, the paper reported.

Police officers should not push people off roofs. Giving someone the option of jumping or having a taser used against you is not acceptable.

The guy had a history of violence, was charged with 3rd degree grand theft, and ran from police. The article also said he refused to surrender or come off the roof. Besides that he wasn’t even hurt. There’s plenty of stupid to go around but I think the kid should shoulder most of the blame. It’s just an unfortunate situation for everyone.

I can't believe this kid died from a nine foot fall. That's awful...his poor family.

he didn’t die. He wasn’t even hurt. He pleaded guilty to 3rd degree grand theft, resisting arrest, and violating parole for previous domestic violence charges.

I couldn't read the article....

So no broken ankle? No shattered pelvis? The police chased a guy who ws resisting arrest onto a roof...the guy won't come down...and they pushed him off the roof and arrested him without incident?

Is there a news story here that I'm missing? The title could easily read "Cops Do Job Well" and they wouldn't have to change any details lol.

He didn't get hurt, but he could have been hurt, that's the point. The officer's actions aren't wrong only when someone gets hurt or is killed. The fact that someone could be hurt in this situation is the reason why is should not be done. Moreover, whatever the crime, it does not mean that police can push you off a roof.

You’re right. Criminals are all too often pushed off of roofs. We need to stop this barbaric practice.

How exactly should they have gotten this guy off the roof? Surround the roof and wait 15+ hours for him to decide to come down? Perhaps use reverse psychology and encourage him not to jump lol. Perhaps they could rent a bouncy castle and maneuver it under the roof so the temptation to jump is simply too much.

We're talking about 9 feet here...not 20.

Was he armed? If not put bouncy castle under him, then push.

There is no need to push him at all because he said he would go back inside with the officer before being thrown off the roof. Those supporting this type of behavior are the reason we have a policing crisis in America, it also speaks volume of character where they construct scenarios to make this behavior acceptable.

And let's not be fooled by arguments that it's okay because he didn't get hurt because they would still make stan for law enforcement if injury or death occurred.

There is no policing crisis in America. Your anecdotal threads do not prove that.

??

Start a movement? - BAN ROOFS ! ROOFS ARE DANGEROUS !! BAN ROOFS

Likely MORE people are hurt or die falling off roofs ,
than
are hurt or die at the hands of a law enforcement officer.

I live in Scotland, and I have never been to the US. However from what I read and see about American police officers, I get the impression that many are just bullying thugs. This doesn't surprise me.
