The Catholic Church teaches that the Sabbath, the seventh day of the week, should be kept holy as a day of rest and worship. This belief is based on the account in the Book of Genesis that states that God rested on the seventh day after creating the world (Genesis 2:2-3). The Ten Commandments also state that the Sabbath is to be kept holy (Exodus 20:8-11).

The Catholic Church also teaches that the Sabbath is a foreshadowing of the eternal rest that believers will enjoy in heaven (Hebrews 4:9-11). Additionally, Jesus himself and his followers are recorded as observing the Sabbath in the gospels (Luke 4:16, Mark 2:27, Luke 6:6-11).

However, the Catholic Church also teaches that the Sabbath laws were fulfilled by Jesus and that Christians are not bound by the strict observance of the Sabbath as it was understood in the Old Testament. Instead, Sunday, the day of the Lord's resurrection, is observed as the Christian Sabbath. This is based on scriptural passages such as Colossians 2:16-17, which state that Christ's death and resurrection fulfilled the requirements of the Sabbath and other Jewish holidays.

In summary, the Catholic Church teaches that the Sabbath is a day to be kept holy, but that the Sabbath laws have been fulfilled by Jesus and Sunday is observed as the Christian Sabbath.

No, as the Eastern Churches are also Catholic, do not teach that the 1st day of the week is The Sabbath day. The 7th day is and always will be the Sabbath. Sunday is not the Christian sabbath.

No, as the Eastern Churches are also Catholic, do not teach that the 1st day of the week is The Sabbath day. The 7th day is and always will be the Sabbath. Sunday is not the Christian sabbath.
This is more a matter of vocabulary than it is of difference in practise.

The Eastern Orthodox Church views Sunday as the "Lord's Day" and the primary day of worship. Sunday is considered a day of commemoration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and is often referred to as the "eighth day" because it is the day on which God's new creation began. The Orthodox Church also holds that Sunday is a day of rest, similar to the Jewish Sabbath. The Orthodox Church does not observe the Jewish Sabbath as a day of worship, but it does observe the Sabbath as a day of rest.

Maybe so yet my point still stands, Sunday is not, nor ever has been, the 7th day Sabbath...

These are God Words….He spoke them, He wrote them and said not to change one word.

Exodus 20:8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

God personally wrote this in stone with His own finger- these are the works of God alone Exodus 32:16, Exodus 31:18 and we are reminded not to edit His commandments Deut 4:2 or edit His Word. Proverbs 30:5-6 And later wrote His laws in the hearts and minds of His people Hebrews 8:10. God’s law in our heart has always been the will of God. Psalms 40:8

There is no scripture that says the Sabbath was changed in scripture or that any other day was sanctified or made holy by God other than the seventh day Sabbath.

Hebrews 4:9 reminds us that the Sabbath remains for the people of God.

There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God

The word rest in Hebrews 4:9 literally translates into keeping the Sabbath.

a Sabbath rest
σαββατισμὸς (sabbatismos)
Noun - Nominative Masculine Singular
Strong's 4520: A keeping of the Sabbath, a Sabbath rest. From a derivative of sabbaton;

God did not command us to keep the Sabbath in heaven, thats impossible right now and a false teaching deceiving millions God’s will for us in heaven is the same for us on earth. Matthew 6:9-13 Sabbath-keeping is a commandment of God and it is no different than any other of God’s commandments thats we are reminded again we cannot edit. So it’s impossible that the Sabbath that God commanded us to keep holy is not meant for us now. We are warned not to follow the same path of disobedience as the Israelites Hebrews 4:11 Hebrews 4:6 who broke the Sabbath Ezekiel 20:13, Ezekiel 20:21 and expect a different outcome.

Sadly, the corporate day of worship was changed in year 300 but not on the authority of God. We are warned this would happen in scripture Daniel 7:25 - God always warns His people- but do we listen? Most in scripture didn’t and it didn’t work out well for them. Jesus warns us about keeping man-made rules over the commandments of God quoting directly from the Ten Commandments Matthew 15:3-9. We must worship Him in Truth and Spirit John 4:23-24 and all of God's commandments are Truth Psalms 119:151- we are sanctified by the Truth in God's Word John 17:17 those who keep not His commandments there is no Truth 1 John 2:3-4

Keeping Sunday as a day of worship over God’s Sabbath i.e. God’s holy day Exodus 20:10, Isaiah 58:13 is a commandment of the Catholic church and not a commandment of God. They take full credit of this change and admit it did not come from scripture.

We all have a choice do we follow what God asks of us and trust in His Word that every Word is pure and needs no alterations Proverbs 30:5-6 or be guided by what we are warned about by following man-made rules. Isaiah 8:20 Matthew 15:3-9

Question: Which is the Sabbath day?
Answer: Saturday is the Sabbath day.
Question: Why do we observe Sunday instead of Saturday?
Answer: We observe Sunday instead of Saturday because the Catholic Church transferred the solemnity from Saturday to Sunday.
—Rev. Peter Geiermann C.SS.R., The Convert’s Catechism of Catholic Doctrine, p. 50

Q. Have you any other way of proving that the Church has power to institute festivals of precept?
A. Had she not such power, she could not have done that in which all modern religionists agree with her; —she could not have substituted the observance of Sunday the first day of the week, for the observance of Saturday the seventh day, a change for which there is no Scriptural authority.
—Rev. Stephen Keenan, A Doctrinal Catechism; New York in 1857, page 174

Deny the authority of the Church and you have no adequate or reasonable explanation or justification for the substitution of Sunday for Saturday in the Third - Protestant Fourth - Commandment of God... The Church is above the Bible, and this transference of Sabbath observance is proof of that fact.'
—Catholic Record, September 1, 1923.

It is well to remind the Presbyterians, Baptists, Methodists, and all other Christians, that the Bible does not support them anywhere in their observance of Sunday. Sunday is an institution of the Roman Catholic Church, and those who observe the day observe a commandment of the Catholic Church.

From a Catholic perspective, the observance of the Sabbath on the seventh day (Saturday) is not considered a requirement for Christians. The Catholic Church teaches that the Sabbath was a ceremonial law given to the Israelites in the Old Testament, and that this law was fulfilled by Jesus Christ in the New Testament. Therefore, Christians are not bound to keep the Sabbath in the same way that the Israelites were. Instead, the Catholic Church teaches that Sunday, the day of the Resurrection, is the day of worship for Christians. This is referred to as the Lord's Day, and the Sunday Mass is considered the most important liturgical celebration of the week.

These are God Words….He spoke them, He wrote them and said not to change one word.
From a Catholic perspective, the scriptural basis for not observing the Sabbath on the seventh day as a requirement for Christians can be found in several passages of the New Testament.

  • Colossians 2:16-17 states that the Sabbath was a shadow of the things to come, but the reality is found in Christ.
  • In Romans 14:5, the apostle Paul states that "One man esteems one day as better than another, while another man esteems all days alike. Let every one be fully convinced in his own mind."
  • In Mark 2:27 Jesus himself states "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath."
  • In Matthew 11:28-30 Jesus invites all to come to him and find rest for their souls.
The Catholic Church teaches that these passages and others like them demonstrate that the Sabbath was a ceremonial law given to the Israelites in the Old Testament, and that this law was fulfilled by Jesus Christ in the New Testament. Therefore, Christians are not bound to keep the Sabbath in the same way that the Israelites were. Instead, the Catholic Church teaches that Sunday, the day of the Resurrection, is the day of worship for Christians. Yes, and "Christian sabbath" is not "seventh day sabbath", it is, in fact "8th day Sabbath" with "sabbath" meaning "rest day"

Romans has nothing to do with the Sabbath...it is regarding fasting...
In Romans 14:5, the Apostle Paul writes, "One man esteems one day as better than another, while another man esteems all days alike. Let every one be fully convinced in his own mind."

From a Catholic perspective, this passage is understood to mean that there is no commandment in the New Testament that obligates Christians to observe a particular day as holy, such as the Sabbath. Paul is stating that each person should be fully convinced in his own mind about the observance of days.

The Catholic Church teaches that the Sabbath was a ceremonial law given to the Israelites in the Old Testament and that this law was fulfilled by Jesus Christ in the New Testament.

The passage from Romans 14:5 is also understood to mean that the Church recognize that people have different practices and beliefs and that it is important to respect those differences and to not judge others based on those differences.

The Catholic Church teaches that the importance of Sunday observance has been passed down from the early church, and Sunday is the day of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, it is the day that the Lord has made and it is the day on which we celebrate the Eucharist. It is a day of rest and worship, and it is also a time for reflection and for growing in faith.

Welcome anyone who is weak in faith, but not for disputes over opinions. One person believes that one may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. The one who eats must not despise the one who abstains, and the one who abstains must not pass judgment on the one who eats; for God has welcomed him. Who are you to pass judgment on someone else's servant? Before his own master he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand. (For) one person considers one day more important than another, while another person considers all days alike. Let everyone be fully persuaded in his own mind. Whoever observes the day, observes it for the Lord. Also whoever eats, eats for the Lord, since he gives thanks to God; while whoever abstains, abstains for the Lord and gives thanks to God. None of us lives for oneself, and no one dies for oneself. For if we live, we live for the Lord, and if we die, we die for the Lord; so then, whether we live or die, we are the Lord's. For this is why Christ died and came to life, that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living. Why then do you judge your brother? Or you, why do you look down on your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of God; for it is written: As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bend before me, and every tongue shall give praise to God. So (then) each of us shall give an account of himself (to God).
Romans 14:1-12

Mark means that the sabbath was created for Adam ("man" in Hebrew). Adam was created first, on the 6th day and the sabbath was made after him, on the 7th day.
Mark 2:27 states, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath." This verse is often understood by the Catholic Church as a statement about the purpose of the Sabbath.

From a Catholic perspective, this passage is understood to mean that the Sabbath is not an end in itself, but rather it was established for the benefit and well-being of humanity. The Sabbath was given as a gift to the Israelites, to provide them with a regular day of rest and worship, and also to remind them of their deliverance from slavery in Egypt.

The Catholic Church teaches that the purpose of the Sabbath was fulfilled by Jesus Christ, and that the Sabbath was a ceremonial law given to the Israelites in the Old Testament. Therefore, Christians are not bound to keep the Sabbath in the same way that the Israelites were.

This passage is also understood to mean that the Sabbath is not a burden, but a gift, and that it should bring rest and refreshment to the people of God. It is a reminder of God's love and grace, and it is a time to celebrate and give thanks for all that God has done for us.

The Catholic Church teaches that the Sabbath, the seventh day of the week, should be kept holy as a day of rest and worship.
I find that surprising.
I know that the Catholic church accepts that the Bible Sabbath started in Eden - is the 7th day of the week etc.

But as I understand it "the Sabbath obligation was transferred to Sunday" according to the Catholic Church.
This belief is based on the account in the Book of Genesis that states that God rested on the seventh day after creating the world (Genesis 2:2-3). The Ten Commandments also state that the Sabbath is to be kept holy (Exodus 20:8-11).
Well I do agree with that - that is for sure.
However, the Catholic Church also teaches that the Sabbath laws were fulfilled by Jesus and that Christians are not bound by the strict observance of the Sabbath
Then there would be no 'transfer' - since the Sabbath simply ended.

In summary, the Catholic Church teaches that the Sabbath is a day to be kept holy, but that the Sabbath laws have been fulfilled by Jesus and Sunday is observed as the Christian Sabbath.
Sunday is observed as the Sabbath but the Sabbath is ended??

The Catholic Church teaches that the Sabbath, the seventh day of the week, should be kept holy as a day of rest and worship.

Catholic Catechism shows that all ten - the Decalogue are a single unit and form grave obligation for all mankind - to this very day.

Catechism of the Catholic Church - PART 3 SECTION 2

2076 By his life and by his preaching Jesus attested to the permanent validity of the Decalogue.

2077 The gift of the Decalogue is bestowed from within the covenant concluded by God with his people. God's commandments take on their true meaning in and through this covenant.

2078 In fidelity to Scripture and in conformity with Jesus' example, the tradition of the Church has always acknowledged the primordial importance and significance of the Decalogue.

2079 The Decalogue forms an organic unity in which each "word" or "commandment" refers to all the others taken together. To transgress one commandment is to infringe the whole Law (cf. Jas 2:10-11).

2080 The Decalogue contains a privileged expression of the natural law. It is made known to us by divine revelation and by human reason.
2081 The Ten Commandments, in their fundamental content, state grave obligations. However, obedience to these precepts also implies obligations in matter which is, in itself, light.

From; The Catholic Ten Commandments | beginningCatholic.com

Again, the Ten Commandments are a description of the basic freedom from sin that is necessary to live as a Christian.

They are a minimum level of living, below which we must not go.

The Ten Commandments and Catholicism have been bound together since the time of Christ. In fact, Jesus refers to the Ten Commandments and assures their validity in his dialog with the rich young man in Matthew’s Gospel (Mt 19:16-21). The Catechism refers
to this in item #2052.
==================================

No wonder then that the Catholic church is one of the denominations listed as having decalogue - affirming statements.

If God "rested and was refreshed" on the seventh day, man ought to "rest" and should let others especially the poor, "be refreshed." the Sabbath brings everyday work to a halt and provides a respite. It is the day of protest against the servitude of work and the worship of money.

" 2173 the Gospel reports many incidents when Jesus was accused of violating the Sabbath law. But Jesus never fails to respect the holiness of the day. He gives this law its authentic and authoritative interpretation: ' the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.' with compassion, Christ declares the Sabbath for doing good rather than harm, for saving life rather than killing. The Sabbath is the day of the Lord of mercies and a day to honor God. ' the son of man is Lord even of the Sabbath.' "

Dies Domini is a papal encyclical on the subject of Sunday and how it is regarded by tradition to be a holy day rooted in the 10 commandments as a continuation of the 4th commandment (numbered 3 by Roman Catholics).

Dies Domini pt 11

"the rest of the Sabbath..discloses something of the nuptial shape of the relationship which God wants to establish with the creature made in his image, by calling that creature to enter a pact of love".

Dies Domini pt 13 -

"the Sabbath ...is therefore rooted in the depths of God's plan. This is why unlike many other laws - it is not within the context of strictly cultic (Jewish) stipulations but within the Decalogue the "ten words" which represent the very pillars of moral life inscribed on the human heart!! In setting this commandment within the context of the basic structure of ethics, Israel and then the church declare that they consider it not just a matter of community religious discipline but a defining and indelible expression of our relationship to God, announced and expounded by biblical revelations.

Dies Domini pt 11 "if the first page of the book of Genesis presents God's work as an example for man, the same is true of God's rest - on the seventh day God finished his work which he had done therefore God blessed the seventh day and made it holy...it is a gaze which God casts upon all things, but in a special way upon man, the crown of creation. It is a gaze which already discloses something of the nuptial shape of the relationship God wants to establish with the creature made in his own image, by calling that creature to enter a pact of love."

"we know that in the O.T it was the seventh day of the week - the Sabbath day- which was observed as the Lord's day. that was the law as God gave it...'remember to keep holy the Sabbath day.. the early Christian church determined as the Lord's day the first day of the week. That the church had the right to make such a law is evident...
"The reason for changing the Lord's day from Saturday to Sunday lies in the fact that to the Christian church the first day of the week had been made double holy...
nothing is said in the bible about the change of the Lord's day from Saturday to Sunday..tha is why we find so illogical the attitude of many non-Catholics who say they will believe nothing unless they can find it in the bible and yet will continue to keep Sunday as the Lord's day on the say-so of the Catholic church”

Sunday is observed as the Christian-Sabbath.
So then Sabbath continues?

Do you edit the commandment of Ex 20:8-11 to say "remember the Christian Sabbath to keep it holy"
Is it changed to say "but the first day is the Sabbath of the LORD thy God"?? Ex 20:10

This poses a problem for certain denominations making "sola scriptura" arguments (not all of them - but some of them) since historic evidence does not support this change coming from a command in scripture.

So then I am in agreement with the Catholic teaching on several key points
1. The Ten Commandments remain and to break one is to break them all
2. The Sabbath commandment applies to all mankind and has from the very start.
3. The TEN Commandments are included in the moral law of God that defines what grave obligation is for mankind
4. There is no command in scripture for any edit/change of the Sabbath commandment

So then I do not agree with editing the Sabbath commandment - but on many other points I do agree with what the Catholic church says about the Bible teaching on this topic.

Catholic Catechism shows
The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) teaches that the Sabbath was a ceremonial law given to the Israelites in the Old Testament and that this law was fulfilled by Jesus Christ in the New Testament. Therefore, Christians are not bound to keep the Sabbath in the same way that the Israelites were.

The Catechism states: "Sunday is expressly distinguished from the sabbath which it follows chronologically every week; for Christians its ceremonial observance replaces that of the sabbath. In Christ's Passover, Sunday fulfills the spiritual truth of the Jewish sabbath and announces man's eternal rest in God. For worship under the Law prepared for the mystery of Christ, and what was done there prefigured some aspects of Christ:
Those who lived according to the old order of things have come to a new hope, no longer keeping the sabbath, but the Lord's Day, in which our life is blessed by him and by his death." (CCC 2175).
It also states that the Sabbath day rest is fulfilled in the Sunday rest (CCC 2168) and that the Sunday is the day of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, it is the day that the Lord has made and it is the day on which we celebrate the Eucharist. It is a day of rest and worship, and it is also a time for reflection and for growing in faith.

The Catechism emphasizes that the third commandment of God, "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy," and the other commandments of the Decalogue, are fundamentally ordered to love of God and love of neighbor. They state the principal duties of the faithful and determine the rhythm of their daily lives (CCC 2187)

The Catechism also teaches that "The Sunday celebration of the Lord's Day and his Eucharist is at the heart of the Church's life.
'Sunday is the day on which the paschal mystery is celebrated in light of the apostolic tradition and is to be observed as the foremost holy day of obligation in the universal Church.'
'Also to be observed are the day of the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ,
the Epiphany,
the Ascension of Christ,
the feast of the Body and Blood of Christi,
the feast of Mary the Mother of God,
her Immaculate Conception,
her Assumption,
the feast of Saint Joseph,
the feast of the Apostles Saints Peter and Paul, and the feast of All Saints.' " (CCC 2177).
