Introduction to Ephesians 2:1-10.

In Ephesians 2:1-10; we have two aspects of our salvation (deliverance G4982); the first is our deliverance from the dominion of death, and our separation from God[1]. We are delivered from this condition instantaneously, when we come to faith in Christ, at that time we are then identified with Christ by the Spirt, which (spiritually) baptizes us (1Cor.12:13), into a co-death, co-resurrection, and co-ascension with Christ, we are given the newness of His life (Rom.6:3-5; Col.2:11-13); then being justified freely by His grace (Rom.3:34), no longer the children of wrath, but rather the children of God, heirs of the promise of eternal life (i.e. we have the promise of resurrection, the life of the age); this has all been freely given to us by placing faith in Christ (Rom.4:1-6, 22-25; 5:1-2,14-21).

Now as God’s children, we are not only heirs to the irrevocable promise of immortality (Jn.10:28-29). But we now also have the reward of the inheritance set before us, for our attainment, by our faithful endurance (2Tim.2:11-13; the firstborn inheritance, Col.3:24; cp. Rom. 8:17, 29).

This involves the second aspect of our salvation, which is to keep us blameless, delivering us into our inheritance on the day of redemption, at that time we will be glorified, and our bodies will be transformed to the body of Christ’s glory, this will be the third, and final aspect of our deliverance (Phil.1:9-11; 3:20-21).

This second aspect of our deliverance is from the power of the one who has dominion over death (over those who are spiritual dead), and the system of this present Age (Eph.2:2-3). The devil still tries to enslave us ( as sons of disobedience), that we may not perform the present task God has purposed for the chosen company of the body of Christ, the corporate New Man; the devil wants to stop the perfecting of the saints, that the day of redemption may not come, because none will have walked worthy of their calling, and all are beguiled of their reward (Col.2:8; 3:5-8; 23-25; cp. Eph.5:3-6). But through the power of God’s spirit, and the knowledge of His will, we are to be empowered, and made competent to perform this corporate task[2] (Eph.4:111-5:1-2; Col.1:10-14; 3:1-6).

Text:

And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air,

the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—

3under which
(power) we all (just as the sons of disobedience) once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature the children of wrath (enemies with God in our minds, under the control of the powers of darkness), like the left ones (the sons of disobedience, who lose their inheritance, and do not partake when the church enters into its inheritance on the day of redemption).

4But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us,

5even when we were dead in our trespasses, He made us alive together with Christ—by grace you 9
(presently are[3]) have been saved, the Greek construction here gives the sense that are life is secure in Christ. The reason for this is to let us know that God is not our enemy, look how much he loved us even when we were in our worst condition, Christ came to save the world, not to condemn the world, the world was already condemned (Jn.3:16-17;12:47; Rom.5:7-10). This is to show Gods attitude toward us, to allow our conscience to draw near to God’s presence, where we can be empowered by the love of His presence in our hearts, to overcome the works, and deception of the enemy (Eph.3:12-13,16-21; Rom.8:15, 31-39). For the devil wants us to contaminate our conscience into thinking that God is our enemy, in order to estrange our conscience from the presence of God (Heb.10:2-3,14,19, 22; cp Gen.3:8).

6and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. We have been made joint-heirs with Him over all things in our union with Him in His heavenly enthronement, and in our spiritual union, God has blessed us with all the spiritual blessing of Christ firstborn right of preeminence over the powers of the cosmos (Col.1:15,18; Eph.1:4; 20-23).

that he may show... (how he saved us, and the inheritance He has blessed us with in our union with Christ, and the power of His grace working mighty in us to over comes these spiritual enemies that attempt to overthrow the accomplishment of God’s purpose through His image.

8For by grace you (having been) are (being[4]) saved through “the faith.” Just as the life that was freely given to them by God’s grace; so also, is their present deliverance from the power of sin, and the prince of the power of the air, and the evil heavenly hosts of darkness (Eph.6:10-12)

this (salvation) is not out from (ek) you; it is the gift offering[5] of (to) God (cp. Rom.15:16; Eph.5:2),

9not out of (our toiling), that any shall have his own glory.

10For we are His fabric (of His eternal dwelling, cp. Eph. 2:23), created in Christ Jesus for the purpose of good works, which God prepared beforehand (by delivering us), that we should walk in them (in order to receive the glory of our inheritance, 2Tim.2:10). For God works in us that we will perform the works of righteousness (Phil.2:13), which He has before decided to be accomplished, that He may redeem us unto Himself, a people that are holy and without blemish, zealous of good works (Tit.2:12-14;3:5-8; cp Eph.1:4; Col.1:22).

So, our salvation is not out of us, not by our own toiling (things we do), but rather what Christ did, and by what He is doing through us presently, this is made posable by what He accomplished at the cross, and the present power of His exaltation as head over the Body, Christ having dominion over His body (
Col.2:9-10; Eph.5:23-24).

Paul’s point here is that our salvation all stems out from the faithfulness of Christ, in cleansing a people unto Himself that are holy, that He may present us as a holy offering (cp.
Eph.1:4; 5:1-2; 26-27; Col.1:21-22); does that mean there is no responsibility for the believer, and there is no loss for disobedience, no there is, we can lose the firstborn inheritance (Eph.5:3-7; cp. Heb.12:15-16; 1Chron.5:1-2); we are called to believe that our life is secure in Christ, and out from that point, and love that God has for us, this is to cleanse our conscience, which will allow us to draw near to God, and the by the love of Christ working through faith, He will purify us that we may obtain the reward of the inheritance. It is very important that we have the proper knowledge of belief, and these different aspects explained above must be understood rightly in order to access Gods power to produce the fruit of righteousness (Phil.1:9-11).

Paul is here focusing the believers point of refence concerning salvation; being that the wiles of Satan will attempt to make the believer try to obtain holiness before God through the different types of sacramental systems, the believer trying to secure their position before God.

In Paul’s day this problem was with Judaism, one trying to secure their life with God through their constant ritual observances, but be not deceived, these scriptures are still applicable to us for today; for the wiles of Satan do not change, for he is still at work in the ordinances of baptism, the Lord’s supper, and fasting’s etc. Teaching that holiness may be obtained by observing these ordinances, and that one may somehow obtain favor before God, which is not accomplished by dead ritualistic works, but rather by the power of Gods spirit over coming this world, producing the fruits of righteousness that God may grant us the allotted inheritance we have in Christ (Col.1:10-14)

[1] We have been liberated us from the judgment of the second death. Rev.20:15, note that whosoever name is not found in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire, this implies that some of this great white throne judgment are in the book of life (Rev.20:11-15); this is contrary to the teaching that the great white throne judgment is strictly for the lost; but if we look at those of the first resurrection, it is a resurrection only for faithfulness in losing their lives for the testimony of the word during the tribulation, these will enter the kingdom first in a reining position (Rev.20:4, also note this is not the hope, or record of the resurrection of body of Christ, the corporate new man). The unfaithful believers will be raised after the thousand years and be allotted their position in the kingdom due to their works (). So, while the child of God has been delivered from the judgment of the second death, the child of God can be “hurt” of the second death (Rev.2:11) meaning he can lose out on his inheritance “lot” (Rev.21:8), having it burned up in association with the place made for Satan, because the child of God disobeyed the father and associated themselves with the works of darkness (sons of disobedience).
[2] The body of Christ is built up to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ (Eph.4:13), when the gift of his headship to the church (His preeminent authority) is being harmoniously manifested through each member (spiritually) that they have become perfect in Christ; all the members of the body having grown up into him through the love and knowledge of the truth; which its members are to corporately manifest towards to one to another (Eph.4:7,12-16,cp. 1:20-23). When this accomplished, Christ who is currently hid in the glory of God, will then be made manifest at the right hand of God, and we with him, as the body of his glory (Col.3:3-4; 1 Tim.4:16; Phil.3:21-22).

[4] See young’s literal translation. “Ye are having been”.
[5] Note the Greek word here used for gift “doron” (G1435) is used for the offering given to God.
