3 Officers Acquitted of Covering Up for Colleague in Laquan McDonald Killing
Three Chicago police officers were acquitted on Thursday of charges that they had conspired and lied to protect a white police officer who fired 16 deadly shots into a black teenager, a contentious verdict in a case over what many viewed as a “code of silence” in the Police Department.

The judgment, rendered in a tense, cramped courtroom overflowing with spectators, was delivered by a judge and not a jury. Speaking from the bench for close to an hour, Associate Judge Domenica Stephenson rejected the prosecutors’ arguments that the officers had shooed away witnesses and then created a narrative to justify the 2014 shooting, which prompted citywide protests, the firing of the police chief and a wide-ranging federal investigation into the police force.

As soon as I saw the acquittal, I knew the verdict was probably rendered by a judge as opposed to a jury. The blue wall is also propped up by judges and prosecutors, unfortunately.

If anyone is on PCP and carrying a knife, he can be playing a church organ in a clerical collar and I give the police full authority over the situation. It could be Charles Kushner as if that mattered.

If someone is not a threat, I do not want police shooting them. Drug use does not justify shooting a person that is not a threat.

Tell that to Officer Antwan Toney....oh wait, you can't. He was shot and killed in the line of duty.

Witness says Van Dyke yelled racial slurs at him during traffic stop
The first witness in the sentencing hearing of Jason Van Dyke alleged that more than a decade ago, Van Dyke held a gun to his temple and shouted obscenities and racial slurs at him during a traffic stop.

Vidale Joy, who identified himself as a "published author and poet," said that the incident has left him with so much anxiety whenever a police officer pulls behind him on the road that he becomes "momentarily catatonic."

Jason Van Dyke sentenced to 6 3/4 years in prison for killing of Laquan McDonald
Former Chicago police Officer Jason Van Dyke was sentenced to 6 ¾ years in prison Friday for the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald, closing one of the most racially fraught and socially significant chapters in recent Chicago history.

After a daylong hearing, Judge Vincent Gaughan sentenced Van Dyke only on the second-degree murder conviction, finding that it was the more serious crime and the 16 aggravated battery convictions should "merge" into it for sentencing purposes.

That decision means Van Dyke will serve only half of the sentence -- less than 3 1/2 years in prison.

The highly anticipated sentencing came with added tension one day after Cook County Judge Domenica Stephenson acquitted three Chicago police officers of all charges alleging they conspired to shield Van Dyke from scrutiny in McDonald’s killing.

Yet another police officer basically walks for murder. Our system of policing is broken by circular logic. A police officer commits murder, who then blames training, the victim, every other problem in the world, but mostly they couch themselves as a victim of their own department. However, when it comes to reforming the department, there is resistance and claims nothing can be changed. It's all about setting up the next murder, where the killer does less time than many non-violent drug offenders. And then we see the police officers that helped cover up that murder getting off easy too. Again, we see the circular logic of arguing that police reports and testimony treated as gospel in a court, but when that gospel is contradicted and shown to be a lie, then we can never trust their testimony. So which one is it?

It's hard to prove someone lied....civilian or cop.

Not so hard when you have access to all the evidence.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot's administration Wednesday afternoon released thousands of pages of long-hidden records from the city's investigation of an alleged cover-up for Jason Van Dyke, the officer sent to prison for killing Laquan McDonald in 2014.

The records consist of reports from Inspector General Joseph Ferguson recommending discipline for 16 officers based on his office's 2016-2017 probe into the police department's handling of the shooting,

The release also includes scores of documents that accompanied Ferguson's reports, largely fulfilling a Lightfoot campaign promise to release "all the attachments and the evidence" for the reports.

The 16 officers investigated include 11 officers that Ferguson recommended for dismissal in the alleged cover-up, four other officers he recommended for discipline for failing to ensure their dashboard cameras were working properly that night, and a Bureau of Detectives lieutenant who left the department before Ferguson issued a scathing report about his role in CPD's investigation of the shooting.

The officers Ferguson recommended for firing include David McNaughton, a deputy chief of patrol at the time of the shooting, and Eugene Roy, a commander in the Bureau of Detectives. Both retired before facing any discipline.

McNaughton, according to a 28-page summary of his role, approved false police reports by officers even after he had watched the video, which contradicted key aspects of those reports.

In a 34-page summary report about Roy, Ferguson's office said the commander "let stand reports containing materially false statements and conclusions despite viewing video of the shooting within hours of its occurrence and possessing ongoing knowledge of the investigation as it unfolded."

Not sure what part of that you're talking about.
