You might want to have a look at this, it is a 3D reconstruction of the 2nd temple in Jerusalem in the time of Jesus. It is enormous and very beautiful! What a sight it must have been! The link to the video is below:

Thanks the walkthrough especially underlines for me why this was used in Jewish Roman wars. This place is not just a fortified high point, it almost is pretty much laid out like a medieval fortress. With lots of high walls and places to put archers etc.
