This is the deadliest year in U.S. history, with deaths expected to top 3 million for the first time — due mainly to the coronavirus pandemic.

Final mortality data for this year will not be available for months. But preliminary numbers suggest that the United States is on track to see more than 3.2 million deaths this year, or at least 400,000 more than in 2019.

U.S. deaths increase most years, so some annual rise in fatalities is expected. But the 2020 numbers amount to a jump of about 15%, and could go higher once all the deaths from this month are counted.

US deaths in 2020 top 3 million, by far most ever counted

Just try to imagine how bad it would have been if President Trump didn't immediately assemble the best COVID-19 task force ever, implement the Defense Production act during the first week, mandate masks to prevent the spread, institute social distancing, and release the strategic national stockpile to the States that needed assistance most.

The United States was truly blessed to have a True Christian President during these trying times, he will be missed.

Trump in March said fewer than 200000 dead would show his coronavirus policies had succeeded.
Trump once defined success as keeping US COVID deaths below 200,000. When he failed, he said real failure would be 2.5 million dead.

This is the real statistic. I'm sure 1863 was far greater.
We have better access to data, than 1863. There's no excuse for COVID-19 to be so huge. Except for bad leadership or we live in a 3rd word country. Also we have a president and his followers, that encouraged it to get bigger.

And 2019 was the deadliest year in U.S history before that and 2018 was the deadliest year before that, so on and so forth...

All true^^^. And I dont like to miss an opportunity to call out Trump for all the grief he's caused.

But still, I think this is a bit of statistics abuse: comparing raw numbers from different eras without considering a meaningful denominator.

a meaningful denominator like a civil war perhaps?

No, a meaningful denominator like overall population.

I dont see an actual civil war. But it only takes a few to cause a lot of grief if they can just resist the urge to broadcast their preparatory exploits all over social media.
