We teamed up with Faith Counseling. Can they help you today?

I remember when columbine was the exception. Now it has become the norm.

Our final step into abject insanity on this subject was Sandy Hook. After we decided we're ok with classrooms full of dead five year olds, there was nothing else to even talk about.

Business as usual. Just offer 'thoughts and prayers', throw out a few tired old canards about mental health and restart the clock.

The arguments have all been made. Teachers should be armed? Not enough security guards? If college students should be armed? Ban all guns?

Wow, what is wrong with society?

You're exactly right. We've given up and they does in vein. I continue to be ashamed at the state of affairs.

Sandy Hook was really our last chance. If dead first graders doesn't soften one's heart, nothing will. At this point it's just part of American life, all for a massively perverted interpretation of "freedom." And we've experienced freedom 18 times already this year.

Ive kept hearing of how horrible school shootings are from Columbine to Virginia Tech to Sandy Hook to UCC in Oregon. This time, it happened close to home for me. That is why this school shooting frightened me more than other school shootings I've heard of. Then again, I wasn't really surprised to see a school shooting like this happen near my home given America's situation. We really must take action to stop this. Acting will speak louder than words in the end.

"We could not have been more prepared for this situation, which is what makes it so frustrating,"

Is this some kind of "Please don't shoot me"? drill?

That's the sad truth of it...it has become the "norm" slowly over time. Freedoms come with a price...and incidents like this should cause people to evaluate if that price is worth paying.

I mean, if Americans are so insistent that they will never give up their guns because "freedom", then at least schools should be prepared for an existence in a country infested with guns and regular shootings.

Surround the school with barbed wire, post guards in towers with machine guns and deploy national guard units to search anyone going into the premises. Maybe having the suburbs look like a war zone might get it into people's heads that it's what they've signed up for.

There are 100,000 schools in the USA (or so)... the percentages are low for mass shootings...

IMO if you want to help solve this problem insist upon mental health counseling available in schools, allow stronger measures when such a student throws all those red flags, add GOD back into classrooms, stop the violent video games.

NOW Florida tax payers are going to cover the counseling of all students (nearly 3000 in that school and another few thousand in next door school) and for the funerals! That money would have been better spent for on-site psychologists in each school... avoid the trauma which is life-long.

IS THERE ANYONE IN THE WORLD WHO HAS NOT BEEN TRAUMATIZED? :(

Nope. Mentally ill people are not more likely to commit acts of violence. That ancient, vacuous canard is dead and buried. All it does is stigmatize people who suffer with mental illness.

The Myth of Violence and Mental Illness - CMHA Durham

Just one of many links you can't find on the subject.

In fact, the mentally ill are statistically much more likely to be the victims of violence than the perpetrators.

That's not to say mentally ill people don't commit these kind of violent acts, but there is no indication that it is a primary cause of the problem we have in this country.

That is at least worth talking about, though I worry about it infringing on privacy. Depends how it's handled.

    Nope.

If you want to live in a theocracy, you are welcome to move to one. I will gladly pay for your plane ticket out of my country.

Nope. There is no substantial evidence for any causal link between consumption of violent media of any kind and violent behavior. Plenty of correlation, of course, but no causation.
