Suspect in New Orleans attack made series of recordings before Wednesday's attack, officials say

In the recordings the suspect makes reference to his divorce and how he had at first planned to gather his family for a “celebration” with the intention of killing them, two officials who had been briefed on the material in the recordings said. The suspect also talked about how he changed his plans and said that he joined ISIS. He referenced several dreams that he had about why he should be joining ISIS.

The attacker told his college paper that he struggled to adjust to life after the military.

The man, Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar, attended Georgia State from 2015 until 2017, when he received a bachelor’s degree in computer information systems, according to university officials.

Mr. Jabbar complained that complexity of the Department of Veterans Affairs bureaucracy sometimes made it difficult for veterans to get their tuition and other educational benefits paid through the G.I. Bill, and that even a single missing signature or sheet of paper could affect an applicant’s benefits.

He also said that he found it challenging to communicate without defaulting to the military jargon he had adopted during his years in the service — and that doing so can make it difficult for veterans when applying for civilian jobs.

Oh, poor Jabbar!!! Tough times came, and then he bonded with Radical Islam to ease his pain. Then he decided to commit mass murder, with an ISIS flag.

It all makes sense now... It's the world's fault Jabbar had to go down this lowly path. :disrelieved:

Not fitting in, divorced (and mad about it): a good target for radicalization. Hopefully we'll learn something that can help combat such radicalization.
...And by "radicalization" do you mean Islamic literature? Or do you mean Muslim people who may have been influencing him?

The truck used crossed the border in November.

The truck was tracked crossing the U.S.-Mexico border into Texas at Eagle Pass in November, but the person who crossed the border is not believed to be the attacker.

From last night's reporting:
....both the Ford Lighting Pickup and the CyberTruck were rented through the car-sharing company - Turo.

Local and federal law enforcement officials are trying to determine if the man who drove a truck into a crowd in the French Quarter just after 3 a.m. on Wednesday and the man who rented the Tesla that exploded in Nevada are connected beyond superficial similarities: Both men chose soft targets on New Year’s Day and rented trucks through the same budget car rental app, Turo.

I mean ISIS, probably reaching him through social media or other corners of the internet, as they and other terror organizations have done in the past.

--

President Biden said Wednesday evening that the FBI found videos that the driver had posted to social media hours before the attack in which he said he was inspired by the Islamic State group and expressed a desire to kill.

The fact is, there are no ISIS people we know of who reached out to him. Perhaps this "radicalization" is a myth, that doesn't exist, and is instead, a very common interpretation of Islamic literature.

...Perhaps it's time to start admitting that Islam is a "bad" religion, that can easily be interpreted in a dangerous manner.

The best thing the US could ever do, to counter Islamic terrorism everywhere, is to not only allow, but to advocate the open ridicule of Islam as a religion within our society.

...Let's openly mock it, ridicule it, and not stop, as if it were an foreign sport we just don't like.

There should be no difference in protected or discouraged speech between our disdain for the religion of Islam or the sport of soccer.

I don't know if mocking brings anything of value to the table.

However, I would like to see people stop handling the subject with kid gloves. In essence, give it the same treatment they would to any other form of ideological extremism.

You can see the difference in how it's handled when comparing Christianity to Islam.

When a Christian extremist commits arson at an abortion clinic or commits a hate crime against a gay person, there's zero hesitation in calling out a causal link between doctrine and behavior, and ideology itself gets the primary focus.

When an Islamic extremist commits a radical act, the first priority always seems to be defending Islam as a whole, and "making sure everyone knows they're not all like that"

Just in a general sense, when people make the critique of "you shouldn't say anything negative about Islam, because that'll just provoke people and create more extremists" (when they'd never say the same regarding the other religions) is, in and of itself, a quasi-admission by those folks that there is, indeed, something different about that religion compared to many of the others.

Your silly idea would cause a dramatic increase in Islamist terrorist attacks in the United States and against United States' interests elsewhere in the world.

Nobody's stopping you. But "the US" has no opinion: all religions are equally free.

Why would it? Unless you're suggesting that terrorism is intrinsically linked to Islam.

The reason should be obvious.

Stigmatization of groups, whether Islamic, rural white, or otherwise, seems mostly to push individuals with risk for radicalization further down the extremist path. Punitive measures, banned speech, and indignant public discourse can backfire and increase the drive for radicalization.

Do soccer players become violent when we say that soccer is a boring, lame sport?

...If the behavior of a soccer player and a Muslim are different, that's not my concern. My paradigm should not be subject to someone else's perspective.
